I just got a free Yamaha RX-360 on craigslist. The guy said it was dead, and he didnt know what was wrong. After toying around a bit, I realize that its just a dead display. I open it up and, even better, its just the backlight bulb thats dead. Pull out the soldering iron and an old christmas light (the kinds that you get on the long strings) and in no time at all, its fixed.

Only problem that bothers me is its got those annoying spring clip terminals ( http://www.dansdata.com/images/speakerkit/termplug280.jpg ), so i can't fit my 12 gauge cable in it. Maybe its time to downgrade in cable size.:worried:

I too, just got a free Yamaha off craigslist. I was told it was broken, but it seems to work fine. I'm afraid he's going to email me back and tell me he figured out that he's got a broken speaker or something.

I see quite a few Yamaha's with dead displays. Some seem to be dot-matrix. When those die, it's not a bulb, is it?

Don't know what "dot matrix" screens are. Are you talking about VF displays, the kind that are usually in old VCRs?

The kind that was in this Yamaha was a plain old LCD, like the one you might find in a calculator, and there was a bulb with a reflector behind it. The bulb burned out and the owner thought it was dead. His first thought was that it was a fuse problem, but there are no fuses in this model (unless they hid em really really well).

My first impressions are that it is a bit shoutier and has less bass than my Pioneer, although I felt that the bass on the Pioneer got overwhelming and muddy in my small listening room.

I'll give it some time to settle in and report later.

NicoR,

I have a Yamaha RX-350 that has gone through a few bulbs. I, like you, have replaced the bulb with an auto dash bulb (not stock). I suppose if we took the time to replace them with the correct bulb it may last longer, but it seems the correct bulb is not much better. Must be a flaw that is common with this erra Yammie.

i personally would terminate my speaker wires with something like # 1 or 2 (http://www.monstercable.com/RobertHarley/images/TwistCrimpFamily_GLAM.jpg), or see if its possible to upgrade the binding posts.

nice score
