Just a general question? Which Teac Reel-to-Reel 4010S or 4010SL came first and what were the differences? Which one is better and why? Appreciate any info.

While "S" version probably predates the 4010SL version, there was probably simultaneous production runs for both models - as most likely there was shared runs between the SL and GSL models.
Basically, the SL upgrades the S with high bias circuitry in the pre-amp.
The GSL included the Hi-Bias and added high density ferrite heads, reel locks and a pause button.
However, all lines received "mid-stream" improvements in motors, relays and other electronics as they came out.

This general rule aslo applies to the 6010 AN series as well.

I have an S and a GSL. GSL is an improvement in all areas, EXCEPT, I think that the preamp in the S sounds much better.

Hi Bill,
This could be calibration issues. With the AN-S series preamps, there are few trim pots to fall out of line. With the SL/GSL preamps, there's a squad of eq pots.
From a plug & play standpoint (soundwise, anyway) the "S" models often come out of decades in storage ready to "rock", if a little to the "boomy" side.

I had a 4010S when we started selling the SL.

S was first.
