I was reading Vintage Nut thread about Quad Resources .
It was mentioned that a receiver that was set on CD-4 Mode even playing 2 channel music (Vinyl-Tape) would be enhanced beyond their orignal sound .
My Kenwood KR-8340 was not equipped from the factory with a Demodulator installed to let us little guys get into the quad equipment without going broke on our $5.00hr jobs back then .
Instead they offered a KCD-2 plug-in Demodulator that slides into the back of the receiver .
Anyone have one of receivers with the CD-4 Unit ?

I think that you misunderstood my comment in Vintage Nut’s tread. I said:

“The matrix decoders built into almost every quadraphonic era receiver can be used to synthesize quadraphonic sound from two-channel sources, often to better effect than source material originally encoded for quadraphonic.”

The key word here is matrix decoders. The matrix decoders were designed to decode SQ, QS and Stereo-4 matrix encoded records and tapes. The matrix encoding systems manipulated the phase relationships of the four original signals to combine them into two channels of encoded information. In theory, when played back through the proper decoder the four original channels could be reconstituted. Regular two-channel sources also contain some out of phase information that when played back through a matrix decoder will give one a synthesized four-channel effect.

The CD-4 (aka Quadradisc) records required the CD-4 demodulator. The CD-4 system used a high frequency carrier signal, somewhat similar to a FM multiplex tuner, to carry the modulated additional (surround) channel information. When properly demodulated, one could end up with a discrete four-channel presentation. The CD-4 demodulator is only useful for demodulating CD-4 records. It will not enhance two-channel stereo sources into synthesized four-channel.

Your Kenwood receiver has a built-in SQ and RM matrix decoders. You should be good to go with what you already have.

Good listening.
