hello all,

My Sony TC-R7-2's take-up reel has been acting weird, being unstable during rewinding process; I would stop the rewinding, but the take-up reel would keep on spinning... I'd opened up the front to check on the elastic that's holding the take-up reel inside, and found it kinda loose.

Has anyone have the same problem with their r2r and had solved the problem before? From what I'd observed, I think the brakes for both reels are loose, but not sure if I will be able to replace those, since the machine didn't come with a user manual.

any help would be much appreciated:D

thx
k

Just an FYI, according to TheVintageKnob, it's a japanese version of the TC-766-2.

If nothing is obviously loose start by making sure the solenoid which controls the brake is actually working. See if it goes up and down properly when you switch between tape functions. It could be that it or the brake arm are a bit sticky and need cleaning and lubricated.

i took the deck apart today and adjust the brake according to the service manual. but the actual problem is the brake band can't really stop the reel even it's touching the reel. found it really dusty between the band and the reel so i cleaned the band by putting a cloth between the band and the reel to wipe the dust. the reel stops okay now but the brake action is still not as good as my other 766-2 which is set up by an experienced user. is there any way i can improve the brake a bit ?

It sounds like the break pads may have worn-out on your machine.

I can think of a couple possibilities. But I would need to open-up one of my machines and take a close look at exactly how the brake pads are constructed (I dont remember) before I would know if these were feasible.

It would be helpful if you could post a picture of the break-pad so that I won't need to pull one of my machines apart simply to help you.
