Anyone know what triggers the counter auto reset to 0000 when the flip mechanism parks? I picked up a 2nd RX-505 that almost works perfect (after a clean & #&%$ lube, I had to actually remove the right hand pinch roller arm to free it's pivot up), just needs a cassette well bulb and the counter reset to work. It plays and records perfectly on side "A", but when you hit the reverse button and it reverses, either to side B or back to A it flips, parks, does nothing (it's supposed to start playing, but I think it is waiting for the reset,) then it spits the cassette back out and flips it to side A, just like it does when it comes to the end of side B. It really appears to me that because it does not reset so it will not continue to play. I'm looking through the service manual, but not coming up with anything. And about how many 505's were produced over what time period? This one is serial number 2860. My other is about a 14600. I would't have thought there were more than 50,000 made, but just curious. Haven't done a A-B yest, but I was curious if orange cap disease was a more early or late build problem. Long term plan is to recap one, while still having the other.

Well, that is interesting..that would put our "newer" ones near the end of production, usually not a bad thing. BTW, did you get rid of the "stop" screech? This 2nd one didi the exact same thing. Once I lubed it up...nice & quiet. I CAN"T believe that I can't find some switch that resets the counter...hmmmm...I wonder if it uses the position pot on the flip deck..I hadn't thought of that and did not use any contact cleaner on it...I would think THAT logic would be in the service manual..

Bingo, that is exactly what it was. ;-)..a couple of shots of cleaner/lube, exercise the pot by sending the unit in and out and autoreverse works perfect. Only thing left is the bulb and maybe a cleaning of the "Skip" button. Not sure if it is working or not, because I was using a blank tape, and I think the Skip feature needs to see some signal before it will start timing.

I’m 17538. Sounds like you are getting yours up to speed. Sorry, can’t help you with the counter problem as mine has never been cracked open, stock, with the exception of adding a wireless remote. You do need an audio signal to get the Program Seek to work.
