EDIT 04-04-2008: It's in... I'm going to go pick up right now and try to hook everything together!!! I'll probably post picks and do a review as a new thread? WHOO HOO!!!! here i go...
Edit: new related question is down this page at post #9
I pulled the trigger finally and bought the Onkyo TX-SR875 that i've had my eye on for months. It'll be here by the end of next week and I'm dying to get my hands on it. I found a great deal online at Amazon and went to a local non-circuit city store and talked to the salesman and buyer at the store and I got them to match the price!!! So now besides the great price, I have the store's one year warranty and their onsite repair services for the life of the product vs having to monkey around with shipping the beast if something goes wrong. YEAH ME!!!!

Onkyo receivers all carry a 2-year warranty from the factory automatically, too. Great receiver...I work for a company that distributes them and I own one myself. Well, the 605 anyway. Congrats!

Sounds like fun!!! CC seems to have Onkyo's on sale every other day.
How are the Onkyo's in general when it comes to music? I'm looking for a new receiver for my HT but I'm concerned with how they reproduce CD's.

I don't think they sound bad at all but I don't use my receiver for audio...it's only for the 7.1 in-wall/in-ceiling speakers. But I do use it for some surround stuff for DVD-A or SACD and it sounds fine for me. I have 3 separate 2-channel systems for the audio side which I use more.
Newer HT receivers are more centered around video sound and not the audio side of it since that's what seems to be driving the market. Video is voiced a certain way I guess.

I just bought the 805!
I'm really happy with it so far. I'm afraid I don't know enough about HT to crow about it.
I know I don't like having to put my glasses on and turn the lights high just to use it, but that's the way with everything in these days of my dotage.
I even like it for audio. At high volumes though, it sounds a little....well....lumpy. The five speakers seem to battle each other for prominence. Probably an EQ matter.
But I do love low level listening in the dark ,at night, with the different surround modes.
Next step is a new TV monitor but I swear the picture on my old tv is the best it's ever been since hooking up the new Onk.
Or maybe it's due to the new DVD player. Yeah, bet it is at that.

my 10 year old TX-DS575X was dull and weak when in stereo mode for music, but I listened to music through my old Technics 2-channel receiver for that anyway. But from what I've read and heard from others, the new Onkyos (and Denon/Yamaha/Pioneer) have really stepped up the music capabilities... although nothing is going to beat a decent system that is designed specifically for music. My analogy is you buy a minivan because you have kids you need to haul around, and you buy a Viper for going really really fast. If you buy a Viper and fill it full of kids or buy a minivan and take it to the drag-strip, you arent using it for what it's intended for. Buy a great home theater receiver and enjoy movies! Buy a 2 channel hi-fi receiver and enjoy music! I'll be working on the latter next.

I have a fairly new TX-SR705 and use it in a few totally different modes. For movies and HD TV I use it with a 7.1 setup. My main L&R speakers are L100's that I just refurbished. In a 7.1 or 5.1 mode it sounds great. For just listening to music, I run the 705 in the "Pure Audio" mode. In this mode the receiver shuts down everything but the main speakers and is pretty nice, IMHO.
So, the point I guess I'm trying to make is that it's worth having a nice set of main speakers for music, but expanding to 5.1 or 7.1 is also great. I think Onkyo has done a great job with this new lineup. For someone who wants excellent HT, A/V controls, HDMI channels, and just a nice plain old stereo, this does all of those jobs quite well. It's also right at the top of the list for receivers that have most of the current audio formats, as well as a few that are just emerging.
I keep fiddling with things all the time and I have used the Audessey speaker setup a bunch of times now and I am really impressed with how good it works. Other people keep saying that you need a SPL meter to do this right, but I'm going to say that with the Onkyo it does a very nice job and you can always tweak the results manually if there is something you don't like.

:thmbsp:Congrats! I thought about getting this model, but decided on a Denon because of the internet updates. The Onkyo has a better upscaling chip, so I know that was a very high selling point for a lot of people. Let us know your impressions when you get it all setup.

It's still not here!!! I'm literally jumping out of my skin!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice upconverting dvd player that comes in Silver? I was looking at the Onkyo DV-SP405 since it would match the Onkyo TX-SR875 (same model year and silver) and upconverts to 1080p, and its MSRP is $169 (street price about $139). I was going to go with something like this for a year or so until the next-gen blu-ray with the HD-audio formats come down in price (Dolby Digital True HD, and DTS-HD players are still over $600 or so). Onkyo announced last month it is going to discontinue it's HD-DVD players and may start to develop a blu-ray player for the future.

You may try to track down one of the Oppo 970H DVD players (they have them in silver). However, one of the biggest selling points of the 875 is the fact that they use a Reon upscaling chip which may do a better job of upscaling than your typical DVD player.

IT'S STILL NOT HERE!!!! I called the sales guy that I'm dealing with (good guy and very helpful) and he said he was going to call his buyer and find out what the hold up is. It should have been here last week already.
ps... I put in an order for the DV-SD405.

So where did you buy it from? Did they tell you they had it "in the barn" when you bought it? I can tell you from being someone in "the know" that they aren't shipping till the end of this month at best. Hopefully they have the 875's in stock...we sure don't.
DV-SP405's in either color are showing to be readily available, though.

There's a local chain here in greater milwaukee called Colder's. The salesman said that 505's, 605's, and 705's are all in stock in the store but 805's, 875's, and 905's need to be ordered (especially mine because I picked silver). He was supposed to call me back today because he said it should have come already and he was going to call the buyer and find out what the hold up is. I hope I dont have to wait another 2 weeks.
Have you seen the DV-SP405? What do you think of it?

If they ordered them now, it would depend on how many are coming in versus what was initially ordered.
I've only messed with the 405 in our demo room on the audio side but not for video. Sorry...

I just got a call from my salesman. He apologized for the delay but Onkyo had to make my TX-SR875. He said the actual Onkyo warehouse didnt have any so mine was literally manufactured this week! Sucks that I have to wait till the first week of april to get it but it's kinda cool in a weird way at the same time.
The DV-SP405 dvd player came into milwaukee yesterday but was delayed coming to my store by a day so he took $10 off the price for me! I promise reviews will come as soon as everything is up and running.
