Finally had some time to dig out my Sansui SD-3030 RTR.

Nice unit, took some cleaning and adjusting to get it back to performing levels. Seems to work nicely now, other than on occasion there's a screech noise while recording. The screech is definately a mechanical sound that is being picked up by the heads somehow. I can turn down the audio and hear the tape screeching, but am not clear on where it's coming from. Is it the tape itself? Or is it that roller on the left hand side? Theres a stationary spindle about an inch in diameter on the left with a sleeve that rides presumeably on needle bearings that the tape glides around. I've cleaned and lubed this, it seemed to help a lot, but occasionally I still hear the screech. Cleaning again, plus running the tape ahead to end and back seems to clear it up.

Anyone ever hear of such a thing?

What kind of tape are you using ? It sounds like the old "Voilin Tape Syndrome" I had this issue with Scotch 212, the lubricant that Scotch used on the tape has dried out and was causing this loud screetching sound. I switched to Maxell tape and the issue was gone, switched back to Scotch, the issue returned. I have given up on all Scotch Tapes all together, I tried some Scotch 207/208 and it shed all over the place. I now only use Maxell, TDK, BASF Emtec or the new RMGI and have had no problems with the tape.

Hahaha, Scotch it was! I guess 30 year old Scotch just isn't any good when it comes to some things! :D

Scotch "Classic" in this case. Again, running it back and forth a few times seems to do the trick.
