Hi all,
I have a Magnavox FD 1000 SL. It was their first CD player in the USA and dates from 1983. A top loader which is a 14 bit machine. Sounds wonderful and tracks superbly. Anybody else here have a first generation player in working order? Anyone have manuals they could photocopy or PDF?

I've got this player, but it is no longer in working order. I'm pretty sure I've got the manual around here, someplace. Came in a large plastic notebook with disc cleaning cloth and perhaps other goodies as well. Even included the schematic, if memory serves. Mine did sound good, but it died due to mechnical issues. I'd have to bang it on top to start playing, then eventually that trick stopped working.
If I can locate the book, I'll PDF it for you (if no one else chimes in).

Hi,
Appreciate that big time. It plays well and is in nice shape. Has the CDM-0 mechanism which is a pro-grade tank. Sounds much like the ReVox I have lusted for for years. (I have a B 226 in my office at work.).

Don't have your model but have a FD-3040 from 1984 that sounds great.Cool heatsinks in rear and has gain controlls also.It has a S slot in the tray rather than strait slot. It's pretty heavy, sounds nice and don't skip like my other single players and even my changers do.:scratch2:
Although it uses a 14 bit DAC, it achieves true 16 bit resolution using oversampling.

Hi,
Another bit of history: The USA launch for the Compact Disc was in Knoxville, TN on February 1, 1983 at Miller's Department Store. I attended that reception and heard this player for the first time. I was amazed at this medium even with it's imperfect sound. I later took the North American Philips CD player repair course in Knoxville. I wanted this player but couldn't afford one then. I paid $5 for mine here in Athens, TN (60 miles away from Knoxville). Compact Discs cost $18 for budget titles, $24 for full price titles, and $39.95 for 2 CD sets.
