I recently purchased these Maxell tapes from Ebay. Brand new, and never used. The box is even mint ! Awesome. Does anyone have any background on these Maxell tapes.
Photo's are below.

Oh yes the most important question is should I bias these tapes on high with my Teac A2300S ????

There is THAT empty box in the sound booth in my theater....holding spare CD cases, of all things.

It depends on how your specific machine is calibrated. What you want is the bias and eq setting that sounds the closest to identical, when switching from monitoring the "line in" to monitoring the "tape" playback. You will need to find an output amplitude setting that makes the in and out levels the same, then, try different combinations of eq and bias selections. Alternatively, you could simply have your deck calibrated to the tape you want to use. I would not have the deck calibrated to an old tape, even a NOS tape, since aging causes so many variations from tape to tape. High quality new tape formulations are available today, for not much more, sometimes less, than what folks are paying for this old stuff today.

I finally bought some of the new RMGI LPR 35 thanks to the recomendations of the AK Reel to Reel'ers lol, and love it. Got tired of the shedding on the old stuff I got on eBay. Those were BASF type at least 30 years old. Nice new metal reels and all. US Recording Media is a fine place. They ship fast to. :thmbsp:

Well I decided to bust open one of these new/old stock Maxell reels to record. The results were awesome ! The tape sounds brand new, and no drop outs and as I expected no shedding. One thing that is interesting about Maxell tapes is they have that certain smell. Has anyone else ever noticed this ?? I smell it after opening the box. Even a few I have that I bought new in the early 90's that have been played over and over still retain this smell.
I am curious as to what makes them smell this way ?? Any ideas ???
If I was blind folded and asked to smell tapes, LOL, I would know which one was a Maxell.

I know exactly what you mean. I got 20 year old UD35-90's that still have "that smell" I wondered that too. Everytime I open a box or play one of those it brings back good memories. Weird I know.
