So I'm searching for a Region-free DVD player. They naturally aren't in the shops, and while they are on eBay, they seem to be exclusively crap brands like LG, Apex, Liteon, etc. There is one Phillips model, but it's an ugly "slim" silver thing, and all my components are black and decent-looking. Is there a region-free (or easily de-regioned) player that is good-looking, reliable, from a reputable name, and will fit in a stack with other components, and not cost an arm and a leg?

Probably not because there aren't, IMO, many firmware hackers buying high-end players to experiment with.

There is software that allows you to burn region-free backups , but the MPAA would be angry. So , I have to advise you not to use DVD Decrypter , DVD Fab Decrypter , or DVD Shrink-and certainly don't go to doom9.net or majorgeeks .com and download them!

Oppo make region free players. They are very good, reliable, and have good customer service.

I second Jack G. Oppo DVD players are fantastic.

I picked up a used Oppo 940-hd & found the hack code to make it regon free.
The hack was super easy and worked the first try. They come in black, silver or a mirror finish and are the slim type but a little heavier than they look so it won't slide back when you push a button.

Now I'm in the market for a region free Blu-ray player.

The "hack code" for Oppos is usually in the instructions.
As for region-free BD players, there are some available in Europe, don't know about in the US.

I have two Marantz DV-4001 players that can be bought from Accessories4less.com (maybe elsewhere) for about $130 (retail is $299). I have been very happy with them and have had no issues using them in region-free mode (I lived in Germany and have lots of German DVDs). To make region free do the following...

- Power on DVD
- Open Disc tray by pressing Open/Close button
- Press 9, 9, 9, 9, 0, on the original remote
- REGION 0 will be displayed in the left upper corner of the TV screen.
- Turn off DVD player
- Turn on DVD player

You can also find the region-free hacks for LOTS of players here...

Yamaha DVD players are region free. You just punch in some numbers on the remote... can't remember them off the top of my head, though. But I've used it on several models, no problems.
