Hi I'm new to the Forum, and thought I would just jump straight in as I have a specific question, hope this is the right folder to ask!

I recently purchased a great set of Klipsch KG4 speakers from Craigslist and have to say I have been completely blown away by the sound. At the moment I am using a Teac AG-790A Receiver, and want to upgrade to something that will complement the speakers better.

My local 2nd hand audio store has a Sansui 771 Receiver for $125 and a Pioneer SA-6700 integrated amp for $100 and I was wondering what people's opinions on these 2 models were and if these were good deals? Both seem to be in good working order, although the Pioneer has no lights behind the VU meters (not sure if this is an issue though).

Also, I think both the Pioneer (which is 40 wpc) and the Sansui (which I believe is 45wpc) are both are designer for 8ohm loads. Does anyone know if this will have any ill effect on driving 4ohm speakers like my Klipsch KG4's?

Either will work nicely. I'm using an 8 watt Tube amp with mine. 8 watts will kill cockroaches at 100 feet on those speakers. 40 watts is all sorts of plenty.

I've owned the Sansui 881 and loved it, The 771 was very similar. The Pioneer is a nice unit also. So... I have no idea what to tell you. Except that on this choice I don't really see a downside with either receiver.

I have a role in this posting to a slight degree.

I'm interested to hear what others have to contribute. :)

Hauk is a nice guy -- I've met him (and his wife) and suggested he present this topic to AK for comment.

I'd probably go for the Sansui. I know it will drive 4 ohms. I think my Sansui 221 says it will drive 4 ohms on the back. It has a very warm sound, so I think the 771 would be a great choice. I don't think you could go wrong with either the Sansui or the Pioneer.

Get the Sansui and forget about the integrated Pioneer. The Sansui will do everything the Pioneer does and by the time the vintage bug really gets you, you'll want a more powerful integrated than the Pioneer. Consider it like skipping across a stream and a rock you don't really need to use.

I really liked the 771 I had....my vote is with the Sansui..very under the radar model.

Thanks for everyone’s opinions. I think westend is right about getting the vintage bug, I am already eyeing up vintage turntables to replace my current one!

So, will it be the Sansui or the Pioneer? :scratch2:

I am veering toward the Sansui based on comments here, but I think I'll probably make up my mind once I get a full demo of both - I'm planning on going to look tomorrow. I'll keep you posted, thanks for the support :thmbsp:

What did you decide?

I picked up an SA-6700 a few years ago and it worked great powering a couple of large speakers. If you look on the back it says it will power 4 ohm speakers just fine in the A or B channel. I'm Running 8ohm's on A+B.

I do have a question, and this may help your decision. I of course got this on consignment, and as time has progressed, crackle has infiltrated my unite while changing balance, volume etc. So, is Deoxit a solution for this? The main issue is not the volume crackle so much as it often cuts out the right channel as the Selector knob for the auxillary setting does not hold. I often have to hold it tight against the "aux" selection just to get the signal to kick back in. Is this an intermittent problem, or Can I deoxit every so many months to fix it?
