I have a Realistic STA-2290 that was working fine until the other day. I attempted to hook up another receiver to the Realistic's preamp-out and got no sound. But now with the Realistic on its own it will only produce sound at a very very low volume when volume control is at max. When I jiggle the preamp-out I get a loud crackle out of the speakers then back to the very low music. Any suggestions ?!?
Thanks

First, welcome to AK! We are glad that you found us. Don't experiment with the volume controls all the way up. That could be disasterous - and painful - if you suddenly find the problem. Keep them at a normal level. Did you have to remove any "U" shaped jumpers from the back of the receiver to make your connections? If yes, they will need to be reinstalled. If no, make sure that the "Tape Monitor" switch is not on. If the tape monitor switch has not been used for a long time you may need to clean it to get things to work normally again. It is an easy thing to do. In the mean time, turn the power off and operate the tape monitor switch about 100 times. That may temporarily clean the contacts to allow it to work enough for you to identify that the switch itself is the problem. If that does not work, post again and we will give you some additional things to try.
Once again, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome !
Yes, I did have to remove the U jumper, however I did replace them. The tape monitor is in the correct position and seemed to work fine the last time it was used (about a week ago). So I guess I'm still stuck. Any other suggestions ?

Maybe...A cracked solder connection on the preamp out RCA jack...

One of my customers -- a rocket scientist by trade -- reinserted his jumpers so that the pre-outs were shorted together and the main-ins were shorted together. He swore up and down that his receiver had always worked that way . . . and how dare I suggest otherwise?
