I saw a Fisher 400 C for sale for $55 bucks at a vintage furniture shop today. I nknow nothing about this unit. It looks clean and powers up, the receiver was hooked up to some old Advents and sounded very good to me on FM.
I have a trusty Marantz 2215b that I like just fine.
So, do I "need" this unit? For 55 bucks?

It's a steal - It will probably be gone by the time you get back there!

Are you sure about the model number? The well-known Fisher receiver is the 400, (no "C"). The 400-C is a preamplifier. The line goes from the 400-C to the 400-CX to the 400-CXII. Doesn't matter. Run!!
A 400 receiver is in the $200-250 range in average condition, $300+ if it's nice.
The preamp is harder to call. The CXII is $1,000++ in superb condition. I would guess an average 400-C is in the $500 range.
There's one currently on eBay:

This one is in stunning condition. Very hard to find one that nice, and I expect the final price will reflect that.
Let me know which one you have, and if you've seen it, the condition.

Thanks guys. It's the 400 receiver. NO "C", my bad. I'm going to swing by tomorrow after work -I hope it's still there. It's a lovely piece of equipment and I hate to see it languish in this shop. It's been there a while I think.
Would something like this be appropriate for every day use? We're all in and out of the house alot, lots of turning on & off of the Marantz currently in use. I imagine that would stree the tubes a bit.
If I get it I'd be pairing it with some Klipsch KG-1's from about 1991 or so. I have a small house...
And thanks again for the information.

The 400 is a fine receiver, when up to speed. There's tons of info here on restoration. Keep in mind, there are stored voltages in these amps that can be lethal. If you don't feel confident working on it, have a qualified tech do the work for you. Be safe.
Good luck!

Thanks, I have a bit of fear when it comes to electricity. I swung by the place and they closed 5 minutes ago. My wife is going to get it tomorrow while I'm at work.

Geez, if I was in Portland right now it would be gone. How fast can you drive.

I'm lucky, I can walk to this place, although my wife may throw out her back lugging the thing home.
I am also lucky that my wife is going to pick it up for me. :thmbsp:

:tears:
I think she'll put it in the car. By her own admission, she is accident prone.
Great. Now I'm stressed!!

I had to call her. It's been at my house since this afternoon. In one piece.
I'll fire it up again this weekend after I do some more reading on here. :music: I don't want to mess this thing up.
