I found an oddity at the thrift store. It's a VCR that says "PCM Audio"..

So I have been playing some tapes, and only one of my tapes click in PCM mode, and that's the old Ninja Turtles movie (you know, the live action one).

The sound is subperb, CD audio quality it seems. Though when the tape gets by "worn spots", instead of a warbly sound, the sound cuts out and gets scratchy.

I might record a sample as the audio is just cool for VHS.

Any information on this? It has no make or model.

Hi,

The only PCM VHS VCR I know of was made by Technics. This was made in 1980. It was the SV 100. Most EIAJ (Electronics Industries Association of Japan) standard PCM audio processors used either Beta VCR decks or 3/4" U-Matic VCR decks for audio storage. Sony, Nakamichi, JVC, and a few others made these units. The most common was the Sony PCM-F 1. I would like to see a picture of this unit to help ID it. Oh, since you are playing movies on it. It looks like VHS Hi-Fi.

I couldn't find my camera and believe I left it at my mothers house during the weekend...

Here's an audio clip, don't know if you can tell if the VCR is playing it HiFi or PCM. I used the highest MP3 quality possible. It's the credits on the turtles tape, the only tape I have that lit up the PCM light.

I have a Toshiba VCR with PCM audio. It's a great machine and is built like a tank. In it's day, it was a very high-end model.

Its night here and I can't check for sure (in music studio cause of recording I did earlier of it), and I think that's it! But mine doesn't say "Toshiba" on it.

Does my audio clip sound like the audio quality yours has?

Yea I'd say that matches pretty well. It's been a long time since I've played any VHS tapes with PCM audio in that machine... not sure if I even have them anymore.

If your machine looks the same as mine but isn't a Toshiba, I wonder what it is. I'm not sure if mine was made by them or by someone else.

I looked at that DX-900 from Toshiba a LONG LONG time before finally not buying it back in the mid 80's (I was a teenager). Very very nice unit, the only negative I remember is that the audio in PCM was cut off at 16KHz (brick wall possibly)
Otherwise, very nice machine.

I have an old Sony 8mm VCR that has a function that allows you to record 6 parallel stereo tracks in PCM format onto a tape. That is 24hrs of music on 1 120min tape. There is a 70 second lag for the rewind cycle. That really isn't so bad if you consider the time to change an album on a TT. The model # is EV-S700U. Bought it new in the 80's in Germany. I think it cost about $800.00 back then.

Really cool! How does it compare to a CD?
