View Full Version : Onkyo has some pretty nice looking stereo gear.
jlindsey86 03-16-2008, 10:28 PM Silver isn't entirely dead in the modern world. Check out these offerings from Onkyo. Very nice looking setup. If I remember correctly, from Amazon, the amp weighs around 30lbs, with the cd player checking it at just under 20lbs, and the tuner 15lbs. Tends to make one think that the build quality is pretty good. All three for approx $1700, not bad this day and age. Havent heard a digital amp yet but this is making me want to.

avguytx 03-16-2008, 10:56 PM Also, all 3 of them come in black which is the most popular color they sell. I'm seriously considering snagging one of the CD players as the company I work for reps Onkyo. It's built very well and has gotten some great reviews. That integrated sounds very nice, too, and the pair makes a very nice 2-channel team. I could care less about the tuner, though, as I don't listen to radio when I'm home and I sure wouldn't spend $500 on one or any tuner for that matter. (not that I pay anywhere near that pricing...:D )
I can't believe how crappy the binding posts look for that money.
jlindsey86 03-17-2008, 01:31 AM The binding post do look pretty shody. I would really like to see one of these amps in person though. Here is a nudie of it.

thedelihaus 03-17-2008, 02:54 AM Onkyo's stuff, from the low-model stereo receiver and entry level HT units on up, are pretty decent.
I own a HT receiver- just a few years old. Great performer.
However, I've not had much luck with the 6-DVD changers. In three years, I've got one stone-dead one, one tempermental one, and a third that's finicky at times too.
Too bad- picture quality is great. They won't play multi-region, though, nor burned dual-layer discs. Also a shame.
Factory sound, either CD stereo or movie soundtrack, is very good.
jdrum1 03-17-2008, 01:07 PM Good looking stuff.
Had a HT receiver for a few years. Replaced it with a more expensive Marantz (more formats), but thought the cheaper Onkyo sounded just as good.......
Dont like the fixed power cord on a $500 CD player though.
soundboy 03-17-2008, 01:23 PM Onkyo's stuff, from the low-model stereo receiver and entry level HT units on up, are pretty decent.
The 100 watts/channel TX-8522 stereo receiver, with phono input, is an excellent performer.

Believe me...those things are a thorn in my a$$ (and Onkyo's). When they work, they're great. But... One of the many reasons I only like single players and not multi CD changers.

Yeah- I got them for the sole reason I'm handicapped and the convenience is needed, but I may forego the convenience at this point and deal with a single player.
Like I said, video quality is excellent, as is interface, but not being able to play multi-region films, or burned backup dual layers, and the reliability problems with the changers, well, it isn't worth the headache.
jlindsey86 03-17-2008, 04:25 PM avguytx, if you do decide to get the cd player I would love to hear your thoughts about it. Sounds like you got a great hookup on Onkyo equipment.
mmartin0007 03-17-2008, 06:41 PM I had a 908 receiver since 1990 and it still works perfect today. I use it to test new speakers as it makes a clean 120 watts per side and the surround receiver I have a TX-SR502 at 70 watts X 6. Never a day of trouble with any of them.
avguytx 03-17-2008, 08:12 PM avguytx, if you do decide to get the cd player I would love to hear your thoughts about it. Sounds like you got a great hookup on Onkyo equipment.
You could say that...amongst other brands. :D
jlindsey86 03-18-2008, 06:10 PM avguytx, sounds like you have my ideal career.
jdrum1 03-18-2008, 07:04 PM And I just moved from Denton last summer...............;)
avguytx 03-18-2008, 08:41 PM I could hook some brotha's up in this area. lol
Alaric 03-18-2008, 08:51 PM I can't believe how crappy the binding posts look for that money.
I have an Onkyo HT receiver and the binding posts don't look crappy-they suck. Only flaw I can find though!
aquajet 03-18-2008, 10:24 PM I've been using a TX-8222 for a few months now and it seems to be a good, solid unit. My only complaint is the phono stage, which doesn't seem to sound as good as the old Pioneer and Sansui receivers which have had shelf time.
Nice to see other Denton people here.
jdrum1 03-19-2008, 06:50 AM We were only there for a year. GF did an internship at TWU.
betterthan 03-30-2008, 09:57 PM I find it somewhat curious that the A-9555 is Onkyos only integrated for the US market while they have a whole slew of amplifiers for the overseas market including a beefed up version called the "A-9755"
http://www.eu.onkyo.com/indices/index_com_en_53538.html
They also offer their whole lineup in black, silver, and gold in Asian countries...
http://www.intl.onkyo.com/products/hi-fi_components/amplifiers/index.html
Why do they get the cooler stuff?
avguytx 03-30-2008, 10:07 PM Kind of tells you how the consumer market is geared in the US, huh? Or at least what's driving the market in the US. 2-channel is more alive and kicking in other countries than it is here as far as sales of that nature go.
bastek 03-30-2008, 10:11 PM Don't you know that we poor USA guys, are mostly receiver types, while overseas guys enjoy separates more and Home Cinema (Theater) is not a big deal in Europe?
That's why (as a former European) i hate receivers.

Toasted Almond 11-28-2008, 04:00 PM I'd like to see someone match $50 for a brand new Onk TX-SR700 HT receiver delivered to my door from Onk a few years ago. My buddy Bob beat me to the flagship $4k receiver. That was delivered to his door for $150.
WE have the in at Onk.
Older Onk separates are radical good.
junkaudio 11-28-2008, 04:08 PM back to the roots onkyo did a smart move
Toasted Almond 11-28-2008, 04:12 PM I believe for the longest time, that little 8522 stereo receiver and its predecessors, was the only large name receiver that you could get that was 20hz-20khz. Outlaw and some pricey Onk, Denon, and Yamaha also maybe, but not reasonably priced like Onk.

I misread that as Oink. Sorry.
mpdhrd 11-28-2008, 07:28 PM I've been eye balling the A-9555 and DX-7555 for tax time... MSRP have them at $799 and $699 respectively but they are found easily online for about half that. If all goes well with Uncle Sam and my wife and all the stars line up, I'll be able to pick them up around February 2009!!! Now I need to keep looking up a good set of speakers to go with them and my 2-channel will be much nicer than hodge-podge cheapies I have now.
ps... I've seen the complaints about the binding posts. Is there a way to upgrade them?
Alaric 12-24-2008, 06:26 PM I can't believe how crappy the binding posts look for that money.
Take a gander at the binding posts on their top-o-the-line Integras. Look crappy and perform worse.
However, I've not had much luck with the 6-DVD changers. In three years, I've got one stone-dead one, one tempermental one, and a third that's finicky at times too
That's why mine is in the basement and a Sony is in my living room.
huntingskeet 01-07-2009, 11:48 AM MPDHRD,
Don't hesitate on the Onkyo equipment. I picked up a used but like new A -9555 and the DX -7555 last year and am very pleased with them. I'm contemplating getting a matching tuner this year. Keep your eyes open, you might be able to land a good deal like I did and get it for a fraction of original price. Gary
matel 01-08-2009, 02:12 PM I did a couple of easy mods on my A-9555 that improved the sound quite a bit.
First and skeptically I ordered and installed a Hi-Fi tuning fuse ( per SP review) and voices immediatly came through clearer and even more suprisingly a little fuller.
Next following a hard to find post on AA a series of red caps were clipped next to the inputs. Immediatly things sounded cleaner and clearer. I only clipped half to be sure and for comparison purposes.
I was the third owner of this and it still was not broken in. It took another week of running so the midrange didn't sound like an HT receiver. Then I did these little mods.
It gets as much detail and texture as my 3K Classe amp. And these get about 2 or 3 times the texture and detail of a 991 Rotel amp.
The most common remark is how 3 dimensional things sound. It's got good transparency it's dynamic and very musical too my ears.
Bravo Onkyo for bringing this piece out.
This is great audio for the masses.
Glen B 01-08-2009, 04:11 PM What model Classé amp does the Onkyo have as much detail and texture as ?
matel 01-08-2009, 04:26 PM Glen I have a DR 15 175wpc amp. It probablly puts a little more air around images and has that exquisite timing the whole room senses.
The Onk may be a little more transparent and a little faster. But I was really suprised by the texture this revealed.
richh 01-11-2009, 08:45 PM the 7555 cd player is very appealing, especially in the champagne.:yes:
Dark Knight 01-11-2009, 08:58 PM I bought the silver DX 7555 from Amazon. Looks great and sounds even better. I am very happy with it. But, now I will make a very difficult admission. I used to have a JVC cd/dvd player that was maybe $150 new. I would be hard press to tell the difference. Maybe it is there, but still I wonder if I spent my hard-earned money well.
DK
richh 01-11-2009, 09:09 PM well I have not heard it yet so going on looks until I can.Have you seen the gold yet?
Dark Knight 01-11-2009, 09:53 PM Gold? No. I have not seen it advertised. I have tried to stay away from looking at new gear for while.
DK
slotracer 01-13-2009, 12:18 AM Traditionally Onkyo has had some very solid gear . Their tuners in particular (in the past) have been very strong. Some of their older amps have been excellent as well. I have had no experience with any of their cd or dvd players, but from past experience, Onkyo doesn't sit on its laurels.
The 9555 received quite a good review from Stereophile. My daughter's BF has one of their current TX-SR606 home theatre receivers and it is quite good as well. As good as good tubes? Nope! As good as my McCormack? No. But as good as many folks will ever need, particularly if they are not "critical" listeners.
It should be no surprise that Onkyo has made, and continues to make some excellent products. Especially when you consider the cost of entry to their level of performance.
huntingskeet 01-13-2009, 10:27 AM I just found a open box (New) Onkyo T-4555 tuner off Ebay to complement the A-9555and DX-7555 that I already have. Can't wait to get it and try the HD radio out. I can always add Sirius home connect tuner/antenna to it if I ever get the desire to do so, but I have a hard time with concept of having to pay for radio when HD FM is available for FREE!!

The funds are just not available right now. Between the lesser paying job than i had last year and my wife back in school (not to mention the cost of 3 kids, mortgage, car payment, etc) I just dont have the cash on hand to get it. Someday.... someday i'll have much nicer gear than i have right now.

Don't sweat it. A lot of us have been there. Some of us are just old enough to have fought through those very lean years and come out the other end OK. It will happen but takes time and patience. I am 47 and was not even able to consider a single purchase for myself until this year (2008) when I joined AK. And, if your read through AK you can get really good hints on how to put together a good system at fraction of the cost. Hopefully you can pick up something before you have 3 in univer$ity. With one in university already, I am dreading the costs of sending my twins. :tears:

Mine are 11, 7, and 2 so they'll all be hitting college one after the other with no break in between. I'm hoping to get my system upgraded before then when i have to start paying through the nose for their school.
Mr. Lin 01-16-2009, 07:07 PM Dont like the fixed power cord on a $500 CD player though.
That's the first thing I'd take issue with, the second, unless I'm not seeing this correctly, is that it doesn't have 5-way binding posts? I think there are better options around that price point, like the Outlaw 2150, for example.
Infinitoid 01-23-2009, 02:23 PM I've been using a TX-8222 for a few months now and it seems to be a good, solid unit. My only complaint is the phono stage, which doesn't seem to sound as good as the old Pioneer and Sansui receivers which have had shelf time.
Yeah, I really like my refurbed 8222. As you said, the phono stage... It doesn't match the one in my Denon integrated amp that got fried by a lightning strike. All in all, though, it does a fine job powering my Original Large Advents.
Badwater 01-28-2009, 08:56 PM New to this forum.
I have spent the last couple of weeks pursuing the forums and epay looking to get a new amp or receiver...I was looking primarily at vintage Pioneer, Yamaha or Marantz. But with the prices the gear was fetching I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on gear that probably needed to be refurbished. In the end, after reading this thread I decided to order an Onkyo A-9555 from Amazon. I picked up an open box for $399 plus fed-ex shipping. In my opinion a great deal, especially when considering that the I Yamaha CA-1000 I bid on went for $276.
The amp is expected tomorrow. I can't wait to see how it does with my DIY open baffles. :D
Thanks for help.
Bill
BigManAndy 02-22-2009, 02:15 AM I really enjoy my Onkyo home theater reciever.
tx-sr304 (i know, i know, its nothing fancy but was on sale and in my budget)
http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/onkyo_tx_sr304_1.jpg
it gets the job done for me, all its hooked up to now is a turntable and powering 2 little bookshelf speakers. I would buy Onkyo again in a heartbeat.
sounds damn good for what it is!!
