Hi,

Pioneer-1017 (The THX Select2 model) and Denon-688 are going for around 375 at the local Bestbuy.

i need a good 7.1 set up..which is a better buy ?

I know the Denon has Audessey multi-eq but the pioneer has its own calibration tool too.

They are both similar in terms of HDMI support - they're both video only.

I hate to throw another model for you to consider but what about the new Onkyo TX-SR506 coming out in April. Everything I've been reading shows that Onkyo is really working hard to be the leader and trend setter in entry, mid, and high end AVRs. This one here also has 3 HDMI inputs, Audessey 2EQ, 7.1 channels... and when it comes out the suggest MSRP is going to be $379. I'm sure you can find initial sales for less.

I gave in to the Pioneer - 1017.

My Kenwood VR-506 has seen better days..

After plugging into the pioneer - i can now hear the difference !

As for the Onkyo-506, i don't think i can wait till april + it doesn't add too many features. I don't think i'll be going beyond 2 HDMI connections - cable box + dvd player, to warrant more than 2 HDMI inputs that the pioneer offers me.
