This is a question for current and former owners of the Pioneer SX-1980.

I gave my SX-1980 some play time today on my HPM-100's and just couldn't get the BEAST to clear its throat. It was dark and muffled at low volumes and only started to open up with house shaking (literally) volume.

What are your tips for making the BEAST sound better?

Is this a trick question? Do you think you have a problem with your receiver?

Check your bias current.

Let it play at least 12hours/day. keeps the transistors alive.

No, this is not a trick question. I'm not sure if I have a problem, I have not heard a "reference" SX-1980 to know if mine is in tune.

That means I will have to stay home 12 hours a day.:D

I've got the BEAST setup in my smallish listening room. That could be part of the problem. The Pio's may need more room to breath.

Send it off to EchoWars for one of his SX-1980 rebuilds. AK member Negotiableterms did this and has been singing the praises of his SX-1980 ever since the rebuild. This coming from a guy who owns quite a few McIntosh components and world-class speaker systems.

...well, yeah, I would. :scratch2: It's just such a big-assed project.

Be careful what you say Echowars. I am only an 8 hr. drive away and I so want my 1980 to sing for another 30 years !

What does a properly restored SX-1980 sound like? I wonder because a work of art starts with the "right piece of clay" and in my book, my stock SX-1980 is not so good.

All I know is, if it currently sounds worse than your Concept 16.5, there is something definitely wrong with it already.

My SX 1980 sounds Incredibly clean & clear at ALL volume levels:) I have hooked up to it a Pair of USA Kenwoods Model LS-408B's second pair LS-407B's and third Marantz HD 770's. With all four Kenwoods going, the house ROCKS! to the tunes of Bob & Julian Marley and some George Benson Real Jazz. I am trying currently to remove the Walnut cover so I can get faceplate off to clean backside of glass. The walnut cover, for some reason, does not want to come off. Can anyone help me?
