View Full Version : Yamaha C1 Advice Please!

I am currently considering obtaining a Yamaha C1 preamp. From the pictures I received it looks very good cosmetically. The problem is that only one channel works.
From Axel's description of it on TVK this pre has Vfets and from what I'm told by the guy who has it it is one of those that is shot. So...I would then find myself in the position of having to hunt down this part in order to get this pre functioning again. What are my chances of this happening? Would I have a very nice boat anchor on my hands? Opinions/advice most welcomed and appreciated!

Unless you find a donorunit, or someone that has those VFET's in stock (that's a chance close to 0), you are pretty much out of luck, I'm afraid...

That's not a bad idea. I want to rule this decision with my head, not my heart and I'm having trouble doing that. I've wanted a C1 for a long long time but have never been anywhere close to having one as I am now. Figure it has to have issues!

Check with Nakdoc and Unda Maris regarding the availability of the 2SK75 that you would need. Try google also. IMHO that one is priced too high for an essentially non working unit (but high prices are par for the course on that site).

It is indeed a generally expensive site.

I hope you can find what you need to bring it back if indeed you go for it. The C1 has always been on my radar, I'm waiting (and hoping) to find one locally.
Good luck!

Sorry guys...I got nuthin', except to tell you that you need to troubleshoot it yourself to determine if the last guy had a clue. Good chance he was wrong.

That's exactly what I did. Apparently it sold to a guy that already has an intact unit so he now has a very expensive parts unit.

How much did he pay for it?

AFAIK $425.

That's not bad for a parts unit. I paid a hell of a lot more for a working C-1. And in case you're curious, it's a great preamp.

I wanted that puppy in the worst way but in the end couldn't justify putting that much out then trying to hunt down more parts which I may or may not ever find. I'm happy for the guy who bought it, he's now got what he needs to keep his working unit going almost indefinitely :thmbsp:

Mike, I think you made the right decision here bud! If you knew for a fact that you could get the donor part then yes it would have been a good buy for sure. But, to take that chance... I don't know. Me thinks you would have been sitting on it for quite a while.
If another one ever comes around I'll be certain to let you know... but don't hold your breath on that one :smoke:
