View Full Version : Analog Tuner Alignment?

I just found a Yamaha CR 600 at the thrift store for 40.00. I know this is not one of the powerhouse units however it is producing some great notes through my recently upgrader Minimus 7s. Two questions:
1. Since I am new at this but not afraid to look under the hood, how do I go about aligning the FM tuner. The Tuner indicator seems to be off.
2. Where do I find new diplay lights and how difficult are they to replace??
Thanks

Tuner alignment requires some pretty specialized equipment: FM Stereo signal generator, audio distortion analyzer, frequency counter, true-rms meter, etc. It is not a job for DIY, unless you have the juice.

OKAY, I see it is time to shut the hood:no:

If the dial pointer doesn't line up with the station, find the oscillator coil and adjust this. You will need a special plastic tool.

I am not putting down the 'techs' here, but sometimes a simple fix may be what is needed.
Before you go adjusting anything "electronic", see if the pointer is "off" by the same amount across the dial, if it is, then you may be able to loosen the pointers attachment to the dial cord and just shift it a small amount and apply some glue to hold it in place on the cord.

Fred- Are you, or did you used to be on Nesda's "Nesdanet" years back? I think I remember your name as I monitored the list for "the boss". I haven't even had to THINK about Nesda for the last 6 years, or so, as I have changed professions.
Back to the tuner thread- in my case one of my tuners is AM/FM. Its pointer is too far left for FM and too far right for AM. In my youth I've screwed up a few radios. I am "far enough" along to know to either have it professionally serviced or to accept the insignificant difference and leave well enough alone! :nono:

If the dial pointer is off by the same amount in both AM and FM, then -- as Mark T. suggests -- the cure is simply to loosen the pointer, move it slightly, and then recement it down.
Usually, however, the AM is fairly close and the FM has drifted, thus calling for a slight tweak of the oscillator coil.

Brian,
Yes, I'm the same "Fred Longworth" who used to be active in Nesda. Nesda member Tom Brucker is also an AKer, under the handle "Nakdoc." I recently allowed my Nesda membership to lapse, because, as a specialist in classic and vintage audio, I just don't have much in common with most Nesda folks.
What turns me on is SX-1280's and Dual 1229's, not plasma TV.
Best,
Fred

Bdaddy7020 ,
The lamps are 12v and you will need 4 . Be real careful when removing them from the plastic . Epoxy any broken pieces before replacing lamps . The one inside of pointer is the toughest . There a small plastic chip (green) in front of this lamp if it is burnt flip it around to get better light .
Haven't been inside of one in sometime but you might be able just to loosen the wheel on the tuning cap and adjust the pointer some .
Good luck
Barney
