Was browsing thru my LP's when for some reason I thought of Bell Records and realized I don't have any from that label.

I know they had Tony Orlando and Dawn, but who else did they have on their roster that's worthwhile?

What ever happened to that company? Were they an independent or a division of someone else?

The last Monkees LP was on Bell. It was a greatest hits comp in the early 1970s.

The Box Tops come to mind.

Nirvana (the 60s UK group, not grunge) was released on Bell in the US. Early Spooky Tooth maybe? Oh, and one great album (her only as I recall) by Margo Guryan titled Take A Picture. There were one or two Elmore James reissue comp albums on Bell in the 60s, too.

Pee Wee Russell and Sarah Vaughan had Bell releases in the late 50s/early 60s.

Box Tops, Merilee Rush, Mountain (via Windfall subsidiary), Fifth Dimension and Syndicate of Sound are a few. Bell was known more for their "singles" than albums. Bell became Arista after Clive Davis stepped in. (Don't ask me what he stepped in!)

Speaking of singles: Edison Lighthouse's Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes was released on Bell.

Thanks for the songs folks. And the Arista mention.

BTW: The first two Barry Manilow albums were on Bell, then re-released with freshened up album art and some song remixes on Arista. I only know this because a friend of mine liked Manilow back then.

It was called The Monkees - Refocus issued in 1972 then it was released as The Monkees Greatest Hits on Arista in 1976. Same track listing and sequencing. Different covers though. The 1976 album had a better cover in my oppinon.

Yep...he was also a member of the Poppy Family along with his ex-wife Susan Jacks. They had the hit "Which Way You Going Billy"

Hi,

Add to this list Ronny & The Daytonas with "G.T.O." as well as "Harlem Nocturne" by The Viscounts. "The Madison Time" by The Tunetoppers was also an early hit. Del Shannon recorded a few Bell sides. Larry Uttal purchased Bell Records in 1961 and headed the label until 1974. Mr. Uttal went on to found Private Stock Records.
