Still discovering his music, but:thmbsp:. Zawinul has done some of his music. I love that combination (Monk filtered thru Joe)

I have it. Yes, killer-diller. My favorite is World Tour. The most exciting work he's done with the Syndicate, IMO.

How about Vienna Nights?

OMG, I've been beating his drum here for some time now. Cavemen get no respect. :tears:

You mean the obsessive compulsive detective on TV? He's not bad; some episodes are a lot better than others.

It's not really his music, though, it's Randy Newman.

Buy a new vinyl copy or find a clean original of Criss Cross and call me in the morning. :D

What records would you recommend? I have a couple of CD's and one LP. (can't remember....Live with Coltrane, Monk Himself, In Monks mood....or Monk in the mood). I hear but my mind drifts and I don't LISTEN. It takes discipline.

Monk is one of my favorite pianists and jazz musicians, I have Monk's Dream, Underground, and Solo Monk on CD. They're all great, but I think Solo Monk is my favorite of the three, which as the title indicates, is just Monk solo on piano.

Yes, I have that CD of Monk with Coltrane Live at Carneige Hall. Copied it from a CD available at our local public library. I will spend an evening with it.

Look for Monk on Riverside Records. Brilliant Corners was already mentioned, my favorite in Misterioso 1958 and At the Blackhawk 1960. Very good live jazz. Better than Carneige Hall with Coltrane IMHO. I tend to lean towards the live recordings. Criss-Cross on Columbia is a must have also.

Is another great solo that I like to play when I am in a LP mood and feeling audiophile-ish.

Monk was a fantastic musician. His piano chord voicings and arrangements are really inventive.

If you'd like to learn more about Monk, see the video 'Straight, No Chaser', a sort of documentary on him. It includes some interviews with musicians who played with him, his son, and footage of a tour they did in Scandinavia in the early 1960s. Bonus, it's backed by Clint Eastwood, further solidifying the Eastwood & the Bop-era jazz connection.

That recording on Prestige is Titled Thelonious Monk with Sonny Rollins, it was also released as Work. It's the first Monk I heard and still one of my favorites. I esspecially like the cut Friday the Thirteenth. BTW Julius Watkins makes a great contribution on French Horn.

I Also like the Carnegie Hall recording one of my more recent acquisitions. It chronicals 'Trane during his transformation period!

I like Thelonious Monk. Whether he's solo, small group or large group, it's all good. I don't play him often enough and I have 14 of his albums. Brilliant Corners was already mentioned but another essential Monk album is Straight, No Chaser. Also, the recently remastered Keepnew Collection of At Town Hall is quite good and represents Monk in an orchestra setting.

Cheers
