Here I am 45 years old and I don't what music I like any more. I feel like I'm stuck in a rut and can't find myself. Does anyone else share my pain? I really like rock that has orchestra in the background, so I figure..... Okay, I must like orchestra, but I can't really find orchestra music that hits home. I do like Collective Soul some Metallica (S&M), but I can't seem to find what it is that scratches my itch. Have you been down this road, if so, do you have any suggestions?
I have a pretty respectable system, and I need some good music to help bring out it's true potential. I hope I've made some kind of sense of my dilemma.
Thanks,
Ron

Try Jumping off the path of what you usually listen to and pick up some stuff you never heard of. You may find new taste in your music

Ron, you may like some symphonic metal?
Therion is a good start.

Another group I've enjoyed over the past few years is Ayreon.

I hear ya. I have a unique solution to that dilemma in that I go and make my own music if I ever get bored with my collection, but I realize that not everybody can just up and do that. :D
I'm being a bit broad here with your description, but it sounds to me like you might like progressive rock, specifically symphonic prog. If you're not overly familiar with the genre, there's a great definition (http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=4) on the Prog Archives site, along with some others. Based on the bands you mentioned, you might like some of the newer stuff (prog metal, etc.). Check out PA; they have a media player with lots of different examples of the different sub-genres of prog.
Just as a side note, having a nice sound system is very rewarding with this genre because the production is often very creative, adding to the general impact of the music.
I hope you get out of your rut and find some music you like--if not prog, then whatever else strikes your fancy. :music:

Ron,
If you haven't listened to any Porcupine Tree give it a listen.
Progressive Rock, and all recordings are very well done.

Porcupine Tree give it a listen.
Seconded. Spock's Beard is also a good prog band.
Want heavy?
Opeth. Some of their releases are produced by Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree. If you can handle some cookie monster vocals, there's some fine music to be heard.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite drummers, Martin Lopez, is no longer with the band.

Get a sattelite radio subsription and keep flipping the dial until you hear something you like.
I've been listening for a couple of years and found bands and music I never would have otherwise tried.

You need some Alan Parson's therapy! No, not the stuff that was played to death on the radio. http://youtube.com/watch?v=gehERn5QiSQ
Or maybe some Mike Batt.

Here's a Ca peninsula big band radio station, I like it a lot, but if you're not local it's okay because they stream it online: KCEA 89.1 (http://www.kcea.org/)
If you like classical with rock I think this fit the bill for a good in between.

I know how you feel Ron... I kind of got "tired" of the classic rock scene myself and I've switched over to jazz.
Try a Diana Krall CD/album and see what you think! :thmbsp:

I'd start with in absentia and deadwing, but it's all great stuff.

Ron,
I could have written this myself. Having grown up with classic rock.. I still today always come back to my roots. But with that said, I need and WANT to break out of that mold.
I too need some new music. But i'm finding out that I don't like that much of it that's out right now. It used to be if you liked a band, you stuck with them through thick and thin.. with the good albums as well as the bad ones.
today, I can't seem to find any groups that I like enough to buy more than once CD from. Honestly... i like quite a varied amount of music, but i'm one of those person's that has to listen to it several times before I really like it.
Currently listening to Funplex by the B'52's because I'm going to see them in concert tomorrow. :D
B-52's = fun party music.
P.S. I'm the same age, 45.

Diana Krall is great music.. i own several of her CD's. seen her in concert.. and like her stuff. But, after about the third of fourth song, I have to turn it off.
Her music to me all seems to have the same tempo and tone. If should could "Jazz" it up and do some up tempo songs. I think I would like her a lot more than I do now.
If any thing, she needs to break out of her mold.

Maybe give Sade a try. The BEST OF is a great cd and is recorded very well. Killer bass player and rhythm section. This is one disc I never tire of.
