View Full Version : Old guys that like new music

I like the music of my past. "Rock". It's all I listened to for the first 25 years of my life. But gradually the songs got older and the stations that played them turned into Classic rock stations. I found myself drifting to alternative rock stations. Now I can hardly listen to classic rock on the radio, as the play lists still repeat the same 1 or 2 hits off any given album. Mind you, the new music stations are doing the same thing. It's just that at least the songs are recent. Most of my friends are stuck in the past, some even regressing to easy listening. To each his own, but I think I'm lucky to be able to appreciate most of the new stuff. I still don't like to hear singers screaming without a hint of concern for musical tone. But for the most part I like the stuff my 16 year old daughter likes. Anyone else out there like me:yes:

48 and love the new rock and there are a lot of good tunes coming from these bands. The "classic rock" stations get old real fast. I drifted towards easy listening for a while. Now I'm checking out older blues to past the time. I'm also gong back though many old rock artists from the late 60's to the mid late 70's and give them all a listen instead of just their FM hits. When I want to crank it up I listen to some of the new artists (bands).

50 here. The first thing I do when shopping CD's is grab 10 or 15 new releases (regardless of the names), haul them over to the listening station and give 'em a quickie eval. Usually I can leave with one or two new artists per trip. The most new stuff I've bought lately comes from DJ's mixes like Stephane Pompougnac, FatBoy Slim, etc. I find my share of new R&B/ Soul, Metal, Jazz, etc. Catagories are basically the same. The Century is different.

Hmmm maybe I am missing something (54 years young). I should listen to some new stuff.
I do like the Godsmack concert video, the dueling drums are sweet indeed.

I'm getting close to 50, and I listen to some new stuff on the radio. There is only one decent English--language pop/rock station and one decent classical station in Hong Kong; the other Chinese stations are mostly stupid talk-talk-talk with the occasional crappy Canto-pop song. Stil, I get to hear some new stuff, and also check out more sometimes over the Internet.

The verdict?

Like Rat44, I like Nickelback enough to go out and buy some of their music! There are a few songs/groups like that which I like.

That said, probably 2/3 of new music doesn't do much for me. Not only am I not very keen on the hip-hop-derived electronic funk and rap stuff and gratuitous embellishment (vocal arpeggios where they don't belong) that seem to infiltrate too much of it. I'm also sometimes bothered by the terrible grammar and pronunciation a higher percentage of new singers/songs suffer from (compared with in previous eras). Also, some of the recordings are not well mixed/mastered; just too "digital". The ones who do things well, though (like Prince) are okay with me.

I may be old, but I do like SOME of the new stuff! ...mostly the ones like Nickelback who sound more like groups of yesteryear. [Nickelback reminds me a little of groups like BTO.]

50+ here, and I listen to a lot of new jazz, more and more classical, especially contemporary classical, some metal, some twang, and a lot of new rock in addition to the classic rock I've been listening to for 40-some years.

Hey, good music is good music, no matter what you call it. I'm 54 and enjoy anything that has a good beat, good words, whatever. Still don't like RAP at all, and those boys that try to blow out their vocal cords can take a hike. How about some Moby? The Verve? Linkin Park? Papa Roach? 3 Doors Down? Alice in Chains? I don't remember them all, but there is some good music there.

This category would include me. Any time I find something that moves me, my only criteria, it becomes a part of my collection and I'm always looking for that sensation in music, new or otherwise. If it doesn't have staying power, it doesn't get played as much is all. I revisit recordings all the time, however, while adding new ones. The love of music is a passion, ain't it.

40 here. Grew up in the 80's and didn't like most of the music at all . Always did like classic rock but the stations must not realize that Zeppelin,The Doors,Steely Dan etc. have more than 3 songs in their catalogues.

I find I like alot of artists from the last 15-18 years yet even the alt rock stations beat a song you may like to death. I find myself more and more leaning to the local college station where I've discovered bands such as Old Crow Medicine Show , Nickel Creek , Son Volt and the Derek Trucks Band to name just a very few.

Btw, anyone heard the latest from Levon Helm ? I think its called "Dirt Farmer".

42 and I'm with the concept of this thread. Not opposed to new music, I just find it difficult to find stuff that I like without sifting through a sea of crap to get to it. If one of you can find a way to word starting a thread of "new music for old guys" or something - worded so it's obvious that it's trying to solicit suggestions (like some of the current, awesome playlist threads), I'd love to monitor it and try stuff. There are a few things in this thread already that I may have to follow-up on. :thmbsp:

I won't claim to consider myself an old timer just yet (though I'm older than a bunch of you), but to borrow a quote from our most prolific AK poster, Tentoze, "I would rather drink poison than listen to classic rock."

I'm always looking from new music and don't like to pigeonhole my preferences to any one genre or style. :music:

nearly 57...could not be bothered with the stuff the average teen might recognize, anything in the 'top 100' whatever, but do like to keep up with what's going on in the more esoteric reaches of the contemporary scene.

six organs of admittance-- think extremely well recorded amplified acoustic guitar and backing band with a deep respect for the history of acid folk like quicksilver, etc

burial-- the dubstep maestro from london town who keeps his identity secret and produces dub inflected dark soundscapes of cavernous depths

bright black morning light-- big album from last year-- two folks, man and woman, of native american descent, employing a lot of fender rhodes and droning harmonies to create something glistening, reverberant and original

cambodian psychedelic/sin sisamouth and srei sothear- this is a reissue from aquarius records of stuff dug out of street markets in cambodia. sisamouth and sothear were recording in the 60's, absorbing all the sounds of surf, soul, garage and psychedelia they were catching from the GI's, and welding it to their traditional styles of song phrasing.... some of this stuff rocks with such irresistible majesty it's crazy...how did we miss this stuff? sothear's incredibly high pitched voice soaring above the funkiest surf inflected psychedelic garage you ever heard, and its recorded so badly and with so much echo it sounds great!!

i also like to cruise the bins for all the forgotten stuff, stuff you nevere heard of, stuff you would never have listened to in 1960/70 whatever because it was what mom and dad listened to. spy movie stuff, exotica, you name it, enjoyable because its corny and in spite of being corny...if you get my drift.

oh, and here ya go-- dengue fever-- contemporary band of young muso's from brooklyn, i believe, who record in the style and spirit of sisamouth and sothear...you can DL an album on amazon

and so on and so forth

I'll be 44 this next month, and I'm still always looking for new music.. but I have a feeling a little different stuff than what you are all talking about.. BUT.. I'll probably never get tired of new techno and similar...

A few I like.. The new Moby sounds good.. Love Syntax and Goldfrap.. Felix Da Housecat along with Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold are always coming up with some great new mixes....

I bet that might be a little more "newer" stuff than you were thinking though..

I'm 41. Not exactly old, but old enough to have been painfully dissatisfied with the commercial drivel of the 80's and early 90's

I always looked back for good music. (Buffalo Springfield, Tom Waits, all the Grateful Dead associates, Capt Beefheart, Fela Kuti, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen)

Then around 2000, I simultaneously became aware of Lambchop and Modest Mouse. Long story short, this got me excited about current music. I now have a ton of it. I have become a HUGE Will Oldham fan (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) as well as Jason Molina (aka Songs:Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co.)

Some of the other newer music I dig: Kruder and Dorfmiester, Potishead, Sufjan Stevens, Castenets, Davendra Banhart, The Streets, Blackalicious, Nico Case, My Morning Jacket etc, etc, etc.

Although interestingly enough, my interest in Jazz is still archival. I so far am only interested in jazz from 1930-39 and from 1954 to 69 (or so). There isn't much new jazz that flicks my bic.

56 Years young here and firmly planted in classic rock, light jazz and acoustical guitar but I do like SOME of the more recent Linkin Park and Avril Lavigne. There are a few others but I don't remember their names at the moment. There is a lot of recently released absolutely awful "music" that I just cant stand but I do try to listen to as much of the more recent music as I can on XM just to see what is out there. At times I have been pleasantly surprised. I even heard part of something by Snoop Dog the other day that really caught me by surprise.

Since this thread is about what music "Old Guys" like rather than what they don't like I will keep those comments to myself.

Hey, wait a minute.... who said I was an "Old Guy"??????????

Yeh, I'm an old guy, and yeh, I like a whole lot of new music. I even turn my 25 yr old indie-hipster twins on to new music. I never liked much "classic rock" when it was brand new, and I damn sure find no reason to be stuck in it in 2008.

I'm 48 and find only a portion of "new" music appealing, some VERY appealing. I'm going back to page one of this thread and Google all the suggestions for samples. While they all may not be new, they're new to me and I'm always looking to expand my horizons. While not "new" (2003) I can't help but crank up this disc: http://www.mp3.com/artist/the-kerosene-brothers/songs/?tag=tabs;songs&om_act=convert&om_clk=arttabs

Just fifty so far. Tough thing is that some of the music I consider new music is not all that new. My sons and I share a taste for Red Hot Chili Peppers. Others that continue to produce although they aren't new bands include: Cake, Beck, Dave Matthews, Weezer, Crash Test Dummies and Ben Harper (a helluva modern slide player, and pretty good songwriter).

Some bands that I discovered past their active recording are: Soul Coughing (genius stuff); Bo-Weevils, the Pixies, the Von Bondies; Violent Femmes, The Beatles, and Soundgarden (maybe still active but solo stuff from their principals).

Somewhat newer ones would include White Stripes, Muse, Radiohead, Social Distortion and Matisyahu.

There is a lot of crap out there, but that was the case in my generation as well. That doesn't even include such pablum as Barry Manilow and Lionel Ritchie. We had to wait through Foreigner or REO to get to Jethro Tull or Neil Young. I agree with what was said earlier. All generations produce quality music and all generations produce schlock.

Regards,

D-Ray

I am 50 and in years past, in the late 70's early 80's a lot of friends enjoyed the same music. (Mostly classic rock that wasn't classic then) As time has gone on the music that I have gravitated toward is something that I never in would have guessed way back then. Maybe there is logic to the transition.(Old Music: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zepplin, Neil Young, Allman Brothers, and much other old stuff) (New Music: Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, Kasey Chambers, Lyle Lovett, Julie Miller, Mary Gauthier, Be Good Tanyas, Jonatha Brooke, Shawn Mullins, Steve Earle, and a bunch of other stuff) The common thread being the guitar work and the blues influence, the difference being the vocals now going toward the twangy side more. For a while I was wondering if I was the only one listening to this "new to me" music. There was not anyone that enjoyed the same music. It seemed like everyone that liked the music that I liked was about 10 to 15 years younger. We have had some wonderful friends that feel like they havn't made any new music since the mid 60's or early 70's, and I don't mean the bluesy metal stuff. I'm talking about the Everly Brothers, James Brown, and songs that were played on the radio a bunch. Not that there is anything wrong with some of these, but it sure is great to connect with a great bunch of people here at AK that have similar musical taste. Also great to hear about other "new to me" music that prior to AK I didn't know existed. Through some of the members here I have discovered much great music. Look forward to finding more new music.:thmbsp:

When Bill Haley first started doin' it 'around-the-clock', I thought this crap ain't gonna last :D :D :D . Boy, did those words ever have to get eaten  !!!

I gapped-out from about '75 - '85 but apart from that, I'm into . . . most of it :thmbsp:

My latest CD is "Icky Thump" [White Stripes]; I've downloaded every video that Portishead have made - as well as the MP3's :music: ; and I get-off on 'tribal'/ 'aboriginal' - non-commercial recordings [djembe/ didge], to boot!!!

Have you heard some of these young-lady jazz-singers? Some of them remind me of Doris Day or even Ella  . Some of them make an old guy start to think [quite the mistake!] . . . . they [FM station] keep on playing Supertramp this afternoon - and nobody else is 'in' :D.

And, lastly [for now], to 'Crowe' over those who would knock her:

Nice to know I'm not alone here. Great replies and suggestions from everyone. We have a station here called 102.1 THE EDGE. not as ground breaking as they used to be because of their repetitive play list, but still not a bad place to look for alternative stuff.

I thought I was the only older guy that liked "younger" music..... To me there's a certain irony in seeing people my age (I'm 56) hanging on to the older music. Maybe to them it's a reminder of their teenage years, and they think it keeps them young? To me it just makes them appear old.... not open to anything new.

I do some scouring around for newer stuff I like. I've run across a site that really assists the process. ** Musicovery.com ** You can select from various musical styles, tempos, moods, and a few other variables. Based on that input it will generate a whole list of music, and it plays song after song, no commericals or anything. You can even visit each link on the chain of songs to see artist, song, album.

My latest favorites are Dusty Trails and Zero Seven. Not brand new, this stuff came out in the 2000 - 2004 era, but it's new to me. I'm a big lover of female vocals and these are a good fit for me.

I'm only 32, :D, but plan on hanging onto my musical childhood as long as possible!

It does get harder and harder to find about new stuff as my circle of acquaintances gets smaller over the years, but that's what sites like this are all about!

Some of the newer bands (most of these are in the indie rock vein)that I dig that are worth checking out are:

My Morning Jacket (I can't really recommend their latest though)
TV on the Radio
Fleet Foxes
Wilco
Radiohead (maybe you've heard of them? :D)
Broken Social Scene

As a really old guy of almost 67, I remember the original R&B from the 40's and 50's. For the most part, the music (music???????) of the present day is not even music. However, I do love Dead Can Dance, Fleetwood Mac, and a lot of the stuff from the 50's through the 70's. I recently took a box of my son's old treasure, which included his Devo plastic thingy, back to him. He probably treasures it, now.

I'm pretty dang old at 62 and I listen to classic rock once in a while but play mostly new stuff or old bands I haven't heard of before because I am getting bored with stuff I have heard over and over for many years.

I like instrumental new metal rock of 1990s-2008 like Oxes, Noxagt, 5ive, Trephine, Psychic Paramount and Pelican. I also like the mellower stuff like the Grails and Subarachnoid Space. I like drone like Paik, Earth and Growing and some electronic like M-83, Sutekh, e*rock and Sonic Youth's experimental stuff.

What is Twang? I could guess, but it would be just a guess.

I would define it as Roots music. Anything with at least a slight rockablilly or country vibe. Performers could include anyone from The Blasters, Joe Ely, Everly Bros, Lucinda Williams, Wilco, Dave Edmunds, and on and on.

There are great new bands and like in the "old days" lots of crappy ones. But I like a lot of the NY bands like Interpol and the Strokes. Brit band Franz Fredinand, brit soul: Joss Stone, Amy "where's my crack pipe" Winehouse, Duffy. And from your neck of the woods: Arcade Fire and New Pornographers. I'm 54 but not dead or deaf yet.

Theory of a Deadman
Seether
Shinedown
Dark New Day
Static X
Jet Black Stare
Hinder
Three Days Grace
Trapt
Godsmack (not that new)

Tons I can't think of offhand.
My partner at work suffers from CRS (classic rock syndrome) so I get my fill of it during the week.

like many of you the rock we grew up with has turned to the classic rock stations that play the 1 or 2 songs. I listen to a lot of alternative, alternative country, old school country, singer songwriter, classical, jazz. XM Radio has turned me on to a lot of great music, especially XM 45 and 50. Age 46 will turn 47 on Nov.15

I'm 38, and lived in Japan from '97-'02. While there one day in the subway I met an American guy with feathered hair, comb in back pocket, high tops, and white shirt w/broad vertical stripe pattern. Just like I might have dressed in high school circa '87. And sure enough, he came to Japan in the late '80s. The point? You have to always find new music, or you're that guy.

If you are in front of a computer all day like I am, www.slacker.com is a great site for band discovery. In addition to genre stations, like idie, hip hop, etc, you can input an artist you like. They will rotate through a bunch of similar artists and you will generally find a few new ones...

Alternatively, if you like indie, check out www.kexp.org a public radio station in Seattle. I've found about 50 new bands I absolutely love listening there...

Another perennial favorite of mine is http://www.avclub.com/content/home. Every year at new year they have all of their record reviewers do a best of the year list. I generally find a reviewer who has at least one person I know in their list and triangulate with other reviewers to whittle it down to a manageable 2-5 artists to check out.

Just a few suggestions. I don't want any of my new friends to be that guy...

As for me, I listened to a bunch of Death Cab while tiling the bathroom, and now am going through some old Burt Bachrach records. New and new to me...
