I recently was lucky enough to bring home a pair of Marantz 9VAC's that I've upgraded the original EL34's to NOS Blackburn production xf2 Mullards. The 6CG7's are nice GE's, but the important 6DJ8's are of unknown origin other than being originals (Marantz silkscreened).
This leads me to my qustion, other than say some nice gold pin 6922's or 7308's what are the others that are direct drop in's? Can a ECC88/E88CC/6NP23 drop straight in eventhough it has a higher heater spec of 7 volts?
If yes, what would the result be...hopefully a larger soundstage and longer life....
I have some hopefully nice white lettered USA Made Jan 6922 Amperex's coming my way, but I like the idea of having a few flavors....

Well, I guess I've stumped the illustrious panel of experts on this one!

No! Don't drop it in. Don't know much about tubes, but these ECC 88 are delicate electronic components, they may go to pieces!

If you don't mind spending some money, and if you find them, go for some E288CC's (http://www.tubedepot.com/nos-8223.html). Contrary to what they state there, Philips made some even better sounding (IMHO) 288's, but might be hard to find, specially in the US.

I have a pair of Siemens E288CC's in my CDP and they sound great....man, I kind of feel sorry for the SS guys as they don't get the joy of tube rolling, especially when you end up with the right receipe!:thmbsp:
