I have a nearfield setup down in my basement's computer center with a pair of ALR Jordan Entry S speakers. This brand is rare in the US apparently, but really quite excellent. I came upon them at a thrift for $30. They're a smallish rear ported 2 way w/ a 1" neo tweeter and a 4/14" or so metal cone woofer, made in Germany. I've put several common receivers we all know about and love (SX-780, HK430, etc) and a few integrateds thru them, they sounded pretty good. Now the Marantz 2230. What I'm hearing is extraordinary. This is the best sounding system I have now. It is the second best sounding system I've ever heard after a pair of Infinity Reference 1Bs w/ Conrad Johnson amplification--completely different situation, I know, but what I'm experiencing is quite special. It's difficult to pull away--the music, the DJs voices--very captivating and unique sounding with a soundstage that is far broader than you'd imagine. There's probably a number of factors coming together to create this: room acoustic, speaker placement, equipment matching, etc, but being the only set of speakers I have with metal cone woofers, I'm wondering if that is the key factor. Do any other Marantz lovers have their stuff hooked up to speakers with metal cone woofers?

A Marantz 2230 is a VERY special receiver in my book.
I've had them paired up with many different speakers (KLH 17s, Genesis 1+s, BA A40s, Avid 100s....even Realistic Nova-4s)....and they NEVER failed to impress!!

I have been playing my 2230 with a pair of Goodmans for quite some time and boy do they sound magical. The Goodmans are definitely keepers.
And then...
A couple of weeks ago I purchased two pair of Dynacos A25s' for $200.00 bucks. Both sets of speakers were in near mint condition and so I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I hooked them up to my Marantz 2230 and Holy Smokes what an incredible sounding system.
My take with the 2230 is in order to capture that near tube like sound, find speakers that were produced within the same era and I don't believe you can go wrong.
Cheers...

So, is the Marantz 2230 in particular considered "special"? What about some of the other low powered Marantzs? I do have a 2285B w/ wood case that I got a few years back I need to get that thing fixed...
I also have an HPM-40 hooked up in addition to the ALR Jordans and I don't think its a particularly special sounding combination. From that time period, I do have Dynaco A40XL, Large/Small Advents, going to have to give them a shot at some point.
