Since getting back into listening to records, I have been disappointed more than a few times with the quality of recordings. This is an attempt to garner a list of great sounding vinyl. Pressings you can pick up knowing you will have a smile on your face later.

Easy one: Donald Fagen - The NightFly

I saw that today. I have the CD though. Is it a double album? 30 bucks.

I saw that today. I have the CD though. Is it a double album? 30 bucks.Yeah, it's a two-fer. It seems as if most of Jack White's recent projects are done with passion as far as the recording process. The new Raconteurs release makes mention of the exclusive of "magnetic tape" for all you analog lover's out there. I'm not saying there isn't other input from his partner's in crime but there seems to be a consistency. "Icky Thump" on vinyl is another throw-back as far as the total package goes. Gatefold, nice pressing, pleasing to the eye. And ears! I've noticed that the new release by the Breeders (a fave of mine, btw) will be all-analog. no computers used, etc. they refer to the process as "All Wave". Kim's term, I believe. Check it out here:http://breedersdigest.net/2008/

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts-I Love Rock-n-Roll

This thing slams and sounds just as good today as it did in 1981. It does suck as on the back cover it makes mention that "Crimson and Clover" and "Little Drummer Boy" were recorded at such and such studio, when the latter does not appear on the LP. Only released as a single?

Little Feat "Waiting for Columbus" (original issue or the MoFi)
Linda Ronstadt "Simple Dreams" (reviled when new for [ab]use of the Aphex Aural Exciter, but I think it sounds warm and rich)
Grateful Dead "American Beauty" (MoFi)
Heart "Little Queen" through "Dog and Butterfly"
Bruce Cockburn "Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws"
Aja "Steely Dan" (original issue or MoFi) --- actually all of the Dan's original output on vinyl is very good, 'cept "Katy Lied", which had... issues

Hi,

Blood, Sweat & Tears/ Blood, Sweat & Tears (The US 360 sound Columbia or the UK Orange label CBS are best. The Mobile Fidelity is superb on Side 1 but less so on Side 2)
Boston/ Boston (The Epic orange label is best. Look for "wly" or "Wally" for best sound on both sides.)
Santana/ Abraxas (The Mobile Fidelity is amazing. The original Columbias with the KC prefix are excellent.)

Thanks for the good list. There are a few mentioned that I have and but haven't listened to yet(just came back from the South with 500+ new LP's).

My only discovery so far is Bad Finger 'Straight Up' which seems to be really rich sounding.
A dud I found last night is ZZTop 'Eliminator'. Such nice songs on crappy vinyl. There are lumps all over the record from really bad pressing.

Badfinger's "Straight Up" was an engineering piece of genius. Especially when you consider what Todd Rundgren and George Harrison had to work with -- Apple Studios were never known for high quality recordings or pressings.

Basically, the band dragged their feet around for seemingly ever, trying to produce their own record. Finally, someone got pissed, hired Rundgren. He came in and finished the album in 2 weeks, pretty much re-doing everything, much to the bands' dismay. IMO, although I love Badfinger, they would have been a lot better off letting Rundgren do "Ass" and their two Warner albums as well.

Friday Night in San Francisco: by Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía

Incredible live album! If you play guitar or want to play this record will either make you want to practice for days on end, or give it up completely.

Found a copy of this on vinyl at the local thrift store. one of the better 50cent purchases i've made

Especially the first: One Night In Paris (Une Nuit a Paris)--stunning recording--engineered and mixed by Eric Stewart at his own Strawberry Studios.

Agreed, One night in Paris is classic, and if you listen carefully, also seems to be the base for the "Phantom of The Opera", its true, listen sometime.

Ok another good one that I listened to this afternoon.

Over The Rhine, "The Trumpet Child"

Blood Sweat & Tears, I just have the greatest hits LP on Columbia. Great for showing off your system, pace, slam, horn bite, wide soundstage:thmbsp:
Heart> Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Dog & Butterfly.
Any Led Zep but Presence(who was responsible for that POS sonic mess?)
Fleetwood Mac> Rumours,
Map of the World>An Inch Equals A Thousand Miles/1989/Atlantic( very rare, most of this was recorded in one take in different locations easily heard, hard drivin' garage band with talent):thmbsp:
Alan Parson Project>most of them on LP
New Order>most 12' re-mixes from the 80's dance rock with outstanding sonics!

and all of the above!
