OK, I give up! Need to know about taking items aboard continental flights!

I've looked at the TSA website, the USDA website, as well as several airlines websites, and I can't find an answer to this simple question...

What is allowed, if it all, as far as taking fresh vegetables, fruit, or plants onboard a flight that is not leaving the US. I know they don't allow stuff coming/going on international flights, but what about produce/plants grow in the US, remaining in the US? :scratch2:

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, all I can tell you is that, as a major agricultural power, California is quite picky about what can be brought into the state (having moved there, and back, some time ago).

I'm pretty sure that you can't take any food or drink on board a plane unless you buy it from one of the vendors behind airport security. If this is the case, I don't think they'd go for plants either.

You cannot bring produce, plants, soil, etc. between Hawaii and the mainland. There is an Ag inspection at the airports outgoing (mainland-bound), and a questionnaire you have to fill out just before arriving in Hawaii.

As long as it's not liquid, I don't think it's a problem. What are you planning on taking and to where?

Similost has offered to grab some horseradish root for me, which is hard to find in the local markets around here. He will be taking a trip out near where most of it is grown, and if he finds some, would bring it back on the plane with him. From the midwest to Massachusetts.

It would not be leaving the US at any point, and it grows pretty much all over the country (zones 5-9) and is in no way considered an exotic, invasive, or endangered specimum.

It would be in root stock form, not a "Plant" per se. I can see no issues with it being allowed, if that kind of item is allowed at all. I could find regulations regarding foods and beverages for carry on, but nothing for this situation.

I can't imagine that being a problem. Just stick it in the checked or carry-on luggage and run it through. Don't say a thing unless asked. The worst they would do is tell him he can't take it aboard (which I think is unlikely) and have him throw it away.

My time there will be very short lived and rushed, but I will try and see what I can find you John.. if nothing else, I know I can call in a favor to a lot of people and get them to ship me up some.. I could stand to have a few roots myself.
