View Full Version : How long is too long?

On March 21, I paid via paypal for a Systemdek IIX from Audiogon. I paid a whopping $50 shipping from Tucson to my house in the San Diego area. I thought that bought me some speed. However, I still have not received the table. Four days ago, I emailed and asked for an update and/or a tracking number with no response. I sent a similar email yesterday. No response.
How long do I wait to get my credit card or paypal involved? Twelve days seems like an awful lot for Tucson to San Diego.

Call him; you should have his number on the PayPal transition or 411.
Don't let your PayPal timeframe expire. (I believe it's 30 days).

I think you can start the dispute process after 9 days. How long is too long depends on how responsive the seller is. If they don't respond then you have a right to be concerned. Document your attempts and keep all correspondence.
You can report to ebay item not received, but they will automatically tell you to try to contact the member via email and calling before escalating to dispute or claim.
They will tell you that you can to get his phone number using Find a Member:
http://hub.ebay.com/community?_trksid=m37
Read their messages carefully. They have automated ones, but on their dispute responses you will see further down a message that says you can contact eBay if this doesn't answer your question.
They will also tell you if it was paid through Paypal you need to file a dispute with Paypal.
Paypal will automatically ask you to go through email and calling before filing a dispute. If you have done this and gotten no response, I would go ahead and file a dispute. I am clear in my email to seller, that I will file a dispute if I do not hear from them withing xx days. If I call and do not hear from them, I send an email about my attempt to call. If I call and we agree on a date, I document that in a followup email. If the agreed date passes without tracking information updated, I notify him I will file a dispute.
At the dispute stage and if you escalate to a claim ----
DO NOT cancel until it is resolved and received your item.
If you cancel because you feel sorry or believe they will send it, and they still don't, you cannot reopen the claim.
Be patient. eBay and Paypal are especially busy over the weekend, and may take several days to reply to followup questions.
Once the claim is canceled Paypal assumes it was resolved to mutual satisfaction.
If this was by USPS tracking don't get thrown by the initial response that seller contacted the USPS to expect shipment. I think that's just an auto response based on the transaction activity. That is not proof of actual delivery to the USPS or shipment. So don't cancel the claim. You may want to contact Paypal through their contact us link under Help to clarify this.

Yeah don't wait on opening a Paypal dispute for too much longer. I'd give him a few more days to respond.

You e-mailed them and no response?

I'd rather pay $50 to get a TT packed properly than $10 and have it arrived busted up. That said, 12 days is a bit long. I'd expect it to take two days in transit. If it is the deal on A-gon that I think it is the seller looks to have a solid reputation. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt (for a few more days) and keep trying to contact him.

It is the deal that you think it is. I have probably looked at his feedback ten times in ten days. For some reason it doesn't give me much comfort. I am going to contact him again tomorrow and give him until Friday to contact me back.
Does that sound fair? I don't want to be an A-hole.

I'm getting aggravated just reading this and it doesn't even have to do with me. Good luck, I'm sure you'll resolve it one way or another.

I'd go ahead and file a dispute with paypal. Go ahead and get them involved, let them contact seller, you can always cancel the claim.

I think you are being generous. You don't want your claim periods to time out.
eBay: If his feedback shows a history of non-delivery then you can report it as a non-delivery problem on eBay's Report a problem page. They are supposedly concerned with improving the quality of sellers. Reporting it on eBay as a problem is separate from filing with Paypal for a claim.
Paypal: To put pressure on the seller to send the item or get your money back, it doesn't hurt to get the ball rolling on this on Paypal. Both eBay and Paypal will recommend you try to call them first. You can say you don't have any hope of resolving this issue and don't want to waste a long distance call.
I just recently got a message from eBay that another seller has been banned on an item I bid on. And said those who bid be careful of 2nd chance offers and the person who won should start a dispute and claim. So they are watching for bad sellers.
I reported a seller who kept missing ship dates he promised me after several emails and calls. He finally shipped, but eBay banned him anyway. It may have been because of his history under a previous Seller ID.

Do people even read the posts they comment on? eBay has nothing to do with the OP's question this is a sale through Audiogon NOT eBay if you want to be helpful I suggest you keep that in mind.
YES start the Paypal dispute/claim what ever give him a little push never hurts

Sorry, I thought I read it, I guess I just needed a push to see how stupid I can be.
Will try to keep in line, Capitan! :thmbsp:

Keep in mind Audiogon feedback is for all intents and purposes useless.
For several years now the seller has to "approve" your feedback before it gets posted.
Useless. :nono:
If it were me I'd just bypass paypal and file directly with your CC people.
Best,

I know it is frustrating to wait not knowing what is going on. Having said that, sometimes life happens that slows down the process. I would continue to attempt to contact the seller and express your concern about no response. If after a few more days of no response, I would start the process for a refund.
I have not viewed the sale or feedback, but he doesn't sound like a typical scammer to me. JMO

I know life happens, but twelve days without contact and five days with me bugging him across three emails? Who doesn't check email at least every other day? Especially someone who sells on AG.

I've never bought from AG, I think you've been more than patient on this. Since I'm in Tucson, if you would like me to try to help PM me

You are NOT being an a-hole.
I used to worry about it but have dealt with too many jerkoff buyers and sellers to worry too much anymore.
What gets me now is how the sellers get pissed and call you unreasonable for believing them!!

i bought an item using paypal of the internet. (not ebay) after waiting 44 (paypal limit is 45) days and getting no reponse from email or phone i called paypal to file dispute. they asked if it was bought on ebay and i said no. they replied basicly they could do nothing unless it was through ebay. i called credit card company ( i pay paypal with credit card) and they told me i have 30 days to file claim. even though it was past 30 days the credit card company did refund my money (whitch was a substantial sum) when i explained my situation. contact your c c company and find out what the time limit is.
PS-before payment i could contact seller by phone most any time of day. after payment no contact. doesn't look good for your situation.

Assuming that you're sure that the transaction was actually completed (the seller received your order and charged your card), there are two possibilities: either it's been shipped already or it hasn't.
If it has, there's no reason for the seller to not acknowledge that and respond in some manner.
If it hasn't, either the seller is pulling something shady or is unable to reply for some reason;illness, computer crash, family problem, etc.
In any situation, what harm would be done by canceling the charge? If it later turns out there's some reasonable explanation you can always re-do the transaction. If not, then you're on your way to recouping your loss.
Send a final e-mail telling your intentions and then do it.

I got it started, but still have to fax the receipt, etc. So I will wait until Friday like I told him I would to send those.
I am so bummed. I was really looking forward to this deck.
I will upload a png of the ad so that if anyone is interested they can see it - it was removed from AG for being older than 14 days.

I am guessing that. I don't want to think the worst. Let's just hope my CC company gives me my cash back in a timely manner so I can get some wax spinning again.
