View Full Version : Boston/New England AKers- some spring/summer get-together ideas...

Fellas,
We've got a possible shindig at Markus' home this may, but what about a few other smaller-scale get-togethers?
I'm thinking the following-
1) A boston record store hunt. Hit the remaining mom-and-pop record shows and pick up some vinyl before they may be eaten up by continually rising rents and economic spending recession.
2) A RCM-building party. A few options- we all chip in time and cash and build a bunch, or we chip in a bit less cash and build fewer, and raffle 'em off amongst ourselves.
3) A record cleaning party. If we build enough RCMs, we can get together for some BBQ and vinyl cleaning.
4) Another re-foam party. Last one was pretty successful, and enjoyed greatly.
This gives some local AKers a chance to hang out. I've had great pleasure of meeting many, and can call quite a few of 'em friends, at this point. Here's a chance to spread it even further.
My place is small, but my door is open to hosting.

Of those choices i'd be most interested in the RCM build. I could definitely use one of those and i'm not about to spend 700 bucks on one. we could come up with some plans/parts lists for different designs on AK and then once we had what we each needed to make one we could all get together to help each other with building.
I'd also be down for a record shop hop - don't forget that Luke's in Pawtucket, RI is only open for a few more weeks.
No matter what the consensus is, I feel that we could work some BBQ in to any of the suggested ideas. :thmbsp: Except maybe for the record cleaning... :scratch2:
What do you other local doods think?

I wish I was going to be around for a gathering. Would love to meet some AK'ers. Unfortunately I won't be in Boston until school starts up for me again in September. After that I would love to get together with some locals.

I'm in for any of it assuming I can get away from work. Usually with enough notice I can plan around stuff.

The way my house is set up, though it is not small it does not lend itself to large gatherings.......however the door is open here for any AK'ers passing this way. Just PM me.

I would be willing to host, and I'd love to have Paul visit, but I think I have the least accessible house imaginable. There is not a single at-grade entrance (even through the garage)...

I like the idea of a "Round too-it" get together, of course with the beer and BBQ to go along with it.
Everyone bring some of those small projects that you keep saying you'll get "Round Too-It" Like re-foams, re-caps, de-oxit applications, lamps, stuff like that!
Everybody wins! The more experienced members get some items knocked off of the to-do list, the newbs get some hands-on experience with guidance from the not-so newbs, and we all eat and drink!
My place is small, and again access is up stairs to the second floor, But I would be more than happy to host a gathering as well when the weather turns a little better!

By all means, don't worry about me if anyone wants to host the shindig.
If I can't manage to get around in your home, it's my worry, not yours. I appreciate the thoughts, but I imagine I can either find a way to do it (leg braces and "old man" walker) or I can always sit one out. No probs.
A thought- we could do this regularly, and also have a "spotlight guest", of who's system we listen to for that day. This spotlight guest will supply amplification, speakers and source for the entire get-together, and a variety of recordings. We will highlight his system & music for the evening.
Waddya think?
and yes, John, we can keep my records and cds off the spin rotation, as I know you're not a fan of my taste in tunes...

My place is a definite go for May - just gotta figure out which weekend - it'll either be the 17th, 24th, or 31st . . . still waiting to see which weekend is Blair's college reunion :scratch2:
My 'main room' is pretty big, and last year we kinda overflowed to the garage / driveway - GOOD TIMES ! :thmbsp: The only change for this year is I aint cookin' ! missed allot of the great gear and tunes. I think we'll do pot luck or something . . . I gotta start a new post and spell my name right this time :stupid:
I'd be up for a refoam day for sure at your place deli - I have some CTS 12's from my Rectlilinear that need foam . . .

Make sure it doesn't coincide with the Woburn record show either. Last one, the prices were up- a lot. This one may be the last one before prices go sky-high on us, as it's the hipster thing of the moment, buying records, you know... and where there's a market demand, with limited supply, the prices are gonna go up...

John, that's a comics show with records as an afterthought. Though I'm sure it will be a good turnout.
The fella that runs the record show said the date when I was there, sometime in May, and still in Woburn, unless he can get enough interest to switch it to boston.
I'm betting this one in may has a 50/50 chance of making it to boston, and by the next one, it will surely be in Boston. And surely prices will rise...

The post card I received on the 3rd from Monkeyhouse says "The Boston CD & Record Show 2", not a word on the card about comics... are we talking about the same show?
May 17th is scheduled for Woburn, according to the card. The Boston comic show is listed as July 20th...

Monkeyhouse Upcoming Shows, according to my postcard, of which it appears John Birddog's is perhaps different...
Oops- disregard. If I flip the card over, it says-
The Boston CD & Record Collector's Show 2
Sunday April 13, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I initially received a notice this was going to be a comic book show, so either that was an erroneous card, or it changed.
Further adventures in record collecting-------
Sunday April 27-

Saturday May 17th-
Greater Boston Record & CD Collector's Show

Sunday July 20

As for the RCM, keep an eye out for ice cream makers (88Gibson's idea) or bread machines (iphasic's idea) for nice, torque-rich motors....

Just caught this thread and would love to attend once you guys have a solid time/place. Could bring a whole bunch of audio goodies too (even some giveaway prizes :) ).
Have A LOT going on this month and next month have to be at the Munich High End show and some races. Munich is from April 23 to May 1, and my race schedule can be seen at http://www.enjoythetrack.com/race_schedule/ . If the venue is large enough, like a hotel with large parking lot, i'd happily also bring the Formula 2000 car for display/demo.
Please lemme know via PM or e-mail me once you guys have it nailed down.

Well, looks like you and I will get along just fine.
Many members are a bit, shall we say, suspect of my music tastes. Though I've won a few over- just ask Soundweasel- but don't ask his wife).
You and I can gladly share some tunes. Happy Flowers, Swans, Dirty Doctors 2600, Slim Jim & The Mad Cows, Women of Sodom, Crispin Hellion Glover, Reverend Glasseye and his Wooden Legs, Insect Fable, ect...
Nice to hear a fellow also intrigued by the glorious sounds of the engine whine. I used to ride/restore vintage Hondas, and planned on racing in the vintage class. Plans were to rebuild a 400F I had connections to, as well as a "parallel V" conversion to a Yammie XS650.

Nice album :)
Darn darn darn... i have this album from the ?50's? where this woman is using a tube amplifier as a 'bra' of sorts. Will keep looking for it, it is somewhere in my disorganized raks of albums.

This is an album everyone needs. The music is just as good as the album cover. I will have to bring it to one of the meets.

Well this thread got kinda strange, but I'm looking forward to some hanging out. I just got Boston Acoustic A-60s in need of a refoam (assuming I can remove the glue he used to "repair" the surrounds) and I'm pretty sure I'll be needing some support, moral and otherwise. :)
