View Full Version : technics sl-1200 restroration PART 2
fisherlover 04-03-2008, 03:44 PM found out the pitch knob and plate is on back order
so i,m going ahead with part 2
as i said the silver base was badly scratched, had a few deep gouges and the lower right hand corner was damaged at where the metal goes 45 degrees to the side
see my part 1 tread
the paint i used was (get ready for shocker) krylon fusion hammered silver for plastics
this paint will fuse to anything not just plastics and very easy to use, dries fast and no sanding or priming needed
i didn't want the hammered look so i sprayed very lightly at a mist, about 9 coats till it came out the way i wanted,
a grainy look, it came out really nice
and i used a trigger handle that snaps on to can
it makes spray painting alot easier and you won't get paint on your finger when spraying
only the bad part was, i had to sand down all the lettering
i tried painting over the lettering but it did not come out so good so i had to redo the areas
why spend 38 bucks plus shipping for a cover, when you can do this all for under 10 bucks
total cost so far including the table is $115
i will get a new mat for it soon
the one on it is from a cheap table i had lying around
let me know guys what you think?
fisherlover 04-03-2008, 03:46 PM my pictures came small
i have to redo it

jcmjrt 04-03-2008, 06:05 PM I don't have my magnifying glass but it looks good from a distance. :) If it sounds good, then you're in business.
fisherlover 04-03-2008, 06:31 PM OK, I RE DID THE PICTURES
thing sticking out in back of table is flower lamp on the floor
sorry about that
jcmjrt 04-03-2008, 06:58 PM Nice paint job. :thmbsp:
If you really want the lettering, you could always try an art store and the stick-on letters. It looks fine without it though.
Divotdog 04-03-2008, 09:04 PM Looks great!:thmbsp:
kermit z 04-03-2008, 09:07 PM Ah, very nice job. Heck, that looks like a factory paint job :)
Westy 04-03-2008, 09:30 PM paint job looks flawless, well done its a credit to you, well may you enjoy the fruits of your labour :music:
Panotaker 04-03-2008, 09:58 PM It looks great! Now you got me wanting to paint mine.
fisherlover 04-03-2008, 11:07 PM thank you
it does look like a factory job
you can't see it in the pictures
my camera don't take good pictures up close
but it has a grainy look and feel to it
i did get the fusion texture shimmer silver paint at first
and tested on a piece of sheet metal
i did not like it the way it looked but you can use any fusion
paint you like
for you beginners before you decide to paint your deck
i would practice spraying on a piece of sheet metal
do not use wood
get some cheap spray paint 98 cents at walmart and practice,be sure to get the trigger handle and snap it on the can, 2+ bucks at walmart
you will see the difference using the trigger on the can
it's like using a spray gun but a spray can is not like a spray gun
if you know what i mean
i can't really explain to you how to spray paint
you have to practice till you learn it on your own and get the feel of it
i do know one thing don't get anxious to have it painted in one coat or you going to have runs
spray at a light mist, not too close and do it at a fast side to side sweep, let dry for 5 min and do it over again and again till it's the way you want it even if it takes 20 coats
this is the secret ,it's better to spray 20 coats and have no runs right ?
if your deck has deep scratches, gouges or very minor damage
get the spot putty,it works well and very easy to use
available at any auto parts store
it's used to fill in deep scratches in cars
fill scratches with putty using a thin card board or putty knife, let dry then sand it very lightly till smooth with fine sand paper till it's flushed to the metal
run your hand over the finshed work
you shouldn't feel anything but smoothness
you can't make a mistake with this
you can completely remove the putty with sand paper
really quick
fisherlover 04-04-2008, 01:08 PM i was doing the tone arm setup for the first time
but something is not right with the vta
i noticed that the body of the cartridge is almost right against the record even at all the way up
the numbers on the height dial don't go to 6, only up to 3 1/2 and back pass zero about an inch
i got the arm with the base all apart
i don't know why he took it apart when it can be removed
all in one piece
i guess i didn't put it together the right way
i went by the old base
BTW the headshell is not a technics,do i need the right headshell for this table?
i,m going to need help on this guys
similost 04-04-2008, 01:13 PM all you need is for the tone arm to be level when the stylus is in the record. The cartridge I am running now sounds like yours does. The stylus protrudes very little from the bottom on mine, so there is a very thin gap between the cartridge and the album. So long as your tone arm is level is all that matters.
fisherlover 04-04-2008, 01:22 PM the table is level as it can be
but what about the the hight adjustment numbers being off?
similost 04-04-2008, 01:24 PM it will depend on the height of the mat you are using and such. My table had a different stylus than I am using now, and had an added slip mat on it. It was adjusted to almost 6 to get the arm level. After I swapped out the head, and removed the slip pad, I have it back down to 0 for level.
fisherlover 04-04-2008, 02:29 PM ok, i see what you mean
thanks
