View Full Version : Goodwill Record Score
Here is my haul from Goodwill yesterday. I got there and immediately saw some new stuff and started pulling stuff. Pulled around 40 albums and sat down to go through them all and two guys came in right behind me. One immediately came up and started looking through the stuff I had already pulled and wanted to know if I was taking it all. I said it depended on condition. He was obviously unhappy. Seems like I always attract attention at that place. Anyway here is what I got for a buck a record. I think it was about 30 bucks total as I bought some other stuff too:
The Cannonball Adderley Quintet-Mercy, Mercy Mercy!
Stevie Ray Vaugh-Texas Flood
Dixie Dregs-Night of the Living Dregs
Crosby-Nash-Whistling Down the Wire
Charles Mingus-Wonderland
Grateful Dead-Skeletons From the Closet
The Alman Bros-Brothers and Sisters
Dixie Dregs-What If
Led Zeppelin Four (Two copies stuck in one jacket)
The Who-Quadraphenia
The Pretenders
Charles Mingus-Passions of a Man
The Who-The Kids are Alright
John Prine-The Best of John Prine
Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds-Shapes of Things
The Pretenders-Learning to Crawl
Anthony Braxton-Alto Sax Improvisations 1979
Mendelssohn A Midsummer Nights Dream-Mono on Columbia Masterworks
Beetoven Eroica on RCA Red Seal
Little Feat-Time Loves a Hero
Rickie Lee Jones
Little Feat-Feats Don’t Fail Me Now
The Doors Greatest Hits
Jerry Garcia-Cats Under the Stars
Anthony Braxton-The Montreux/Berlin Concerts
Bills Evans-Conversations with Myself on Verve
Chick Corea-Circulus on Blue Note
Little Feat-The Last Record Album
Little Feat-Waiting for Columbus
The Grateful Dead-Live from the Mars Hotel
spartanmanor 04-03-2008, 04:15 PM Sweet! Nice haul.
SpeakerLabFan 04-03-2008, 04:18 PM Nice jazz and Grateful Dead titles, nice thrift pickups :thmbsp:
jcmjrt 04-03-2008, 06:02 PM Hey, I wish that I could find jazz titles at the local thrifts! Good finds.
meggy 04-03-2008, 06:12 PM Very nice. Couple weeks ago I stepped on & cracked my OP Quadraphenia.
TheCrunge 04-03-2008, 06:40 PM I just listened to Quadraphenia for the first time last night. Great album.
That is a great score though. I can't even find a lot of that stuff at the local record stores.
brucered 04-03-2008, 07:05 PM nice. quadrophenia, tkaa, zeppelin, srv.
quadrophenia is SWEEEEET on vinyl, as any THE WHO stuff is. not as nice as TOMMY, but it's up there.
BroonsBane 04-03-2008, 07:22 PM Nice haul :tresbon:
Klownschool 04-03-2008, 07:22 PM Great haul. BTW, I think Quadrophenia is the best of the who. My .02 as a life long who fan. Nice Mingus action too. Ya lucky bastud.
similost 04-03-2008, 07:34 PM Some great titles there..
interesting.. is Quadrophinia that hard to come by? I've got two, haven't checked them both, but I know for sure one is an original pressing.. need to look at the other..
I listened to Cannonball Adderley and that was very good. Record looked perfect too. Now I am listening to Ricky Lee Jones. Believe it or not its the first time I have ever heard it other than what they played on the radio back in the day. Good album too.
caddisgeek 04-03-2008, 08:47 PM Very nice. Couple weeks ago I stepped on & cracked my OP Quadraphenia.
stick to rock climbing meggy, keep of the record shelf

Most post 1970 who records aren't rare per se but an original in ex condition is a treat. An original UK issue is really nice.
Wolverine 04-03-2008, 09:39 PM Good finds, sounds like you got some one's recent record collection donation.
braxus 04-03-2008, 09:40 PM Nice. Its always good to find some records you'd like and didn't have before. Today I was at the local used bookstore outfit and they sell used records. Anyway they had a sale on for a $1 each (that's cheap here in Canada as they usually go for $5 here). Anyway I picked up 26 albums today. Some Sinatra vinyl which I don't find often here. I even found a Prism album which I remember my brother used to listen to. I don't remember the music, so I decided to get it to see what they were like. Even J Geils Band, Louis Armstrong, Sting, Harry Belafonte, and more. Anyway as soon as I get the rca wires resoldered, I'll give these a listen.
As for Quadraphenia- I picked this album up off my ex brother in law's collection which my sister was selling to me. He had two copies. I don't recall if I have both or not. Yet to listen to it though.
brucered 04-03-2008, 11:15 PM i pick up any and all WHO records (in decent shape) at thrift stores, you can never have too many WHO vinyl.
TheCrunge 04-03-2008, 11:33 PM I will be hitting 3 local thrifts Saturday. I need to find some way to appease the Gods of Thrift Karma so I get some decent finds? Any suggestions? Maybe some sort of audio related sacrifice?
kenwood61 04-03-2008, 11:42 PM I love those kind of scores. I recently went to Salvation Army's thrift store and found a super clean, flat red vinyl Canadian pressing of Steely Dan's "Aja" for 85¢.
braxus 04-04-2008, 01:26 AM Wow I saw some Aja records at the store today. I'm not familiar with the album, but maybe I'll go back and pick it up.
kenwood61 04-04-2008, 01:47 AM Personally, I think Steely Dan's "Aja" was one of those rare albums that had the right combination of great music and music recorded well.
I've heard that hifi salesman loved using that album to demo systems.
kenwood61 04-04-2008, 01:53 AM theCrunge = do you have some good record cleaner? :D
I think part of it is knowing what is record damage, and what is dirt. I just got some of the audiophile sleeves from sleeve city. As soon as I start cleaning some LP's they're going into their new homes . . .
the Diskeeper Ultimate Audiophile inner sleeves at
http://www.sleevetown.com/lp-sleeves-inner.shtml
I find some LPs at GW and SA that don't have a sleeve but the record is sometimes in good shape and not scratched or warped. Having sleeves like this make me feel more comfortable with what I choose. Maybe that's all you need. A good "home" for those lost LPs to come home to :smoke:
TheCrunge 04-04-2008, 08:42 AM My cleaning method has worked (home made mix, apply with paint brush, vacuum off with my custom head with a paint pad, dry more with microfiber towel). Using this method, the records that can be made to sound better, do sound better. Some are just too far gone though.
Some thrift records sound great, others are more "meh". The ones that play with no noise make me feel great though. Honestly, for 50 cents a record at the local SA's, I can't complain too much. The enjoyment to cost ratio is still through the roof.
I found a few good albums last week. Hopefully tomorrow I can keep up the trend. Although finding a good pair of floorstanders would be even better (come on Mach 1's, show me Mach 1's!).
Arkay 04-04-2008, 10:16 AM Fine bunch of LPs there for a great price. Well done! :thmbsp:
Very nice. Couple weeks ago I stepped on & cracked my OP Quadraphenia.
OUCH! That had to hurt... :sigh::tears:
beatcomber 04-04-2008, 12:55 PM "Hey, I wish that I could find jazz titles at the local thrifts! Good finds."
You're in the Bay Area, right? I used to score some GREAT stuff at Community Thrift on Valencia and at the Goodwill on Clement. Check out Savers in Daly City on Geneva too. I always found terrific jazz and r&b 78s in the East Bay.
The best place for cheap record hunting is at the huge monthly Alameda swap meet (1st Sunday of the month).

It never hurts to ask the clerks: "Any more records in the back room that haven't been put out yet?"
I routinely do this. You'll get a variety of responses:
No.
Yes, but we need to go through and price them first.
Yes, I go bring them out for you to look at.

Move.
I went back to the GW today. I usually always follow up after a bunch of new stuff shows up cause usually they only put out big collections in dribs and drabs cause they dont have a lot of room in the record racks. Well I am sure it is the same collection I got more today:
"The Who Sings My Generation" on Decca. 1965. Looks like it is Their first US album. In good shape. It had some mold but I put it on the RCM with some enzyme cleaner and a distilled scrub afterward and it looks perfect now. Not a scratch on it and the cover is very good too.
Also got:
The Turtles, It Ain't Me Babe
Alan Parsons-I Robot (Still in Shrink)
Donovan-Mellow Yellow
Santana-Caravanserai
Three Dog Night-Seven Separate Fools. On Dunhill. This is some kind of special Edition or something that contains Seven Cards and they are all in there.

Nice finds. I don't know that the Three Dog Night LP is necessarily a "special edition". I have two copies, both with the cards.

I am sure you are right I have never seen it before. Strike special edition. Playing The Who album now and it plays perfectly. No surface noise even.

I can say without reservation that my greatest scores have always been found on Mondays. Usually around lunch time. My reasoning is that at least here most of the donations happen on Saturdays and Sundays but don't get out to the floor until Monday morning. Thats why Monday around 11-12 is the magic time for me.
braxus 04-04-2008, 07:55 PM Well I went back to the book store and picked up 6 more records including Steely Dan's Aja. They had 4 copies of those, so I picked the best one. Must be a good album if there were that many copies. No red vinyl copies though. All 4 were black.
kenwood61 04-04-2008, 08:10 PM let me know how you like it.
sqdlvr 04-04-2008, 09:22 PM Aja in my oppinion is the best Steely Dan album! I love all the tracks. Well produced and the sonics are terrific. What were the other albums you got when you went back.
braxus 04-05-2008, 01:55 AM Aja in my opinion is the best Steely Dan album! I love all the tracks. Well produced and the sonics are terrific. What were the other albums you got when you went back?
Ok. Here's the list:
Today's six records I picked up were:
Louis Armstrong- In Memoriam
Jazz At Storyville Vol. 1 (Pee Wee Russell and Ruby Braff)
The Popular Duke Ellington (I heard the name, but don't know the music)
Duke Ellington's Greatest Hits
Steely Dan- Aja
Dire Straits- Brothers In Arms (I already have the SACD of this)
And to continue some of the records I got yesterday were:
The J. Geils Band- Freeze Frame
Huey Lewis and the News- Fore!
Huey Lewis and the News- Sports
Sting- Dream Of Blue Turtles (I love this album)
Prism- Armegeddon
Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol. 2
Alannah Myles
Louis Armstrong's Greatest Hits Live
Louis Armstrong- Treasury
Louis Armstrong- Hello Dolly!
Louis Armstrong- July 4,1900-July 6,1971
Nat King Cole- 10th Anniversery
B.B. King- My Kind Of Blues
Frank Sinatra- September Of My Years
Frank Sinatra- This Love Of Mine
Ditto above, but with Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
Frank Sinatra- Adventures Of the Heart
Frank Sinatra- Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back
Frank Sinatra- Sinatra's Sinatra
Frank Sinatra- That's Life
Living Stereo- Porgy And Bess- Lena Horne/ Harry Belafonte
Steppenwolf (First Album?)
Beatles- Magical Mystery Tour (Quite Beat Up though)
Foreigner- 4
And there were a couple others I'd rather not mention. :P
braxus 04-05-2008, 02:27 PM I guess Im a little embarrassed to listen to a few groups I know would get razzed on here. Anyone try that wood glue method for cleaning records? It seems to work by pulling out all the gunk from the grooves by being stuck to the glue itself.

Hey try us! You never know you might find some guys on here who like the same groups. So what did you get that you find embarrassing? Remember as long as you like it, there isn't any shame in it. I'm not afraid to say I like Bubblegum music and bubblegum groups!
braxus 04-05-2008, 03:39 PM Ok. It was a Boy George album with the Kharma Chameleon song on it, plus two Abba Greatest Hits albums. Sometimes I just love corny music. For the Kharma song, I still have a beta tape with the video of that on it when the song was just released.
sqdlvr 04-05-2008, 06:09 PM Hey I like Culture Club. Colour By Numbers is one of my fave albums and still play it to this day and I'm a big Abba fan!!!
clone 04-05-2008, 08:10 PM Nice! Never thought about going to a thrift store to buy records?
Thanks for the tip!
