Not sure I should have got this one but didn't want the chance to slip by.
I like it! Can't decide if I like the style of this or the 2270 better. Guess I will just have to keep both.
Paid about market price for it. Another dirty unit that someone didn't want because the lights are out. Cleaned up very nicely, replaced all the bulbs, I would say a 9 out of 10.
Warms up a little after awhile but I would not say hot. Not sure what the norm is but assuming some heat is normal. Not much static but going to clean the pots anyway.
Questions;
Does anyone have a link explaining what some of the knob functions are? Assuming some are related to Dolby. The service manual I downloaded doesn't say.
How warm should it get before one gets concerned?
Will a w-22 case work? I know its not the right one but it will fit and I have seen pics of a 2285b in one. Concerned about the ventilation, will a w-22 case allow proper ventilation?

Congratulations on getting a very nice receiver. :music: :thmbsp:
Which knobs are you uncertain about? Probably the "multipath" is the one that most people don't understand. It is useful to find the best direction for an antenna, in situations like crowded cities full of buildings, where reflected signals can cause problems.
The 2285B does get rather warm to the touch, especially if you like to crank up the volume. It shouldn't get really hot, though. You should still be able to rest your hand on it without feeling like your flesh is starting to cook. Make sure there is enough space around it for air circulation, and it should be fine. If you are really concerned about it, you could place a small, quiet fan (perhaps a computer fan) nearby to increase airflow.
On the good side, I find mine seems to sound even better after it has warmed up by playing a while. I read somewhere that the engineers who designed it had that in mind - that it would sound best at a "warm" operating temperature. I don't know if that is true, but the result is true, whatever the cause.

Thank you very much.
So far I like it alot.
Questions on the Tone Mode, has in/out 100hz, 10 khz , etc. Is there one setting it should be on? Switching it around seem not to really make a difference.
Whats the difference between FM and FM 25?
I can rest my hand on the case no problem, just feels warm maybe warmer than my other units but not much if at all.
I am concerned about the dual cap problem, didn't really pick that up until after purchase. Sometimes you just gotta take a chance, right?

The tone mode is all preference on your part....
The FM 25us for FM Dolby, which is not in production any more. Your receiver should have a slot in the back to plug a Dolby unit in it. If you have that, you scored... they cost about 100$ extra or more...
I do use the Dolby on my 4400 for FM, I find it does a good job of reducing static...even though its not true FM Dolby.
On dual Caps.... Don't worry, be happy... relatively easy to replace with standard caps if needed. Your unit is most likely fine. Echowars recently posted on that.

Awesome receiver. Bring on the wood case!
Does someone have a link to the thread on converting dual caps to new single caps?

I notice that this unit does not have the jumpers like my 2270. It's sounding pretty good regardless.
Are these supposed to have a set of jumpers?

Internally jumpered.... you plug in a cable and it disconnects the internal jumper.
You should clean them....

I too have a 2285B coming. It was delivered to a good friend in Las Vegas who has a long history of re-conditioning and repairing vintage Marantz equipment. Unfortunately he now does it only as a hobby for himself and a few close friends. I will pick it up in July when I visit him.
I plan to get a full wrap WC 22 case instead of the three-piece WC 122. I plan to remove the metal case before installing in the wood cabinet because it will run in my work office for most of the day and I don't want to run the risk of it running too warm.

Thanks Jstang
Is there a link to clean the internal jumpers, So far I'm only good at cleaning pots and replacing lamps.
