Hello.
My name is Alexis...
I'm vinyldavid's girlfriend.
He made me an AK account :o
so... he told me to tell people about myself....
ummm.. well, I like the same sort of music as David does... I don't know nearly as much as he does, though...
I play a musical instrument called the hammered dulcimer.
I like the color blue a lot... and I like to eat watermelon in the middle of the night during the summer... and I like rusty things... trees... pictures of things... rain : D ... taking walks... I like people but I guess I don't talk a lot... books... and I have a more recent fondness for these AK smilies :lmao: ...
that's all I can really think to say...
:yippy: hehe

Welcome to AK. I don't think we have another dulcimer player in the bunch. It is a fairly rare musical instrument with a very haunting sound. Are you into American folk music or Bluegrass by any chance? What music do you play? Tell us more.

I play mostly American folk... my teacher is in an old time string band, so that's what I play, too
I don't play as much bluegrass simply because my teacher doesn't like it as much
I play some Celtic stuff too

Welcome to AK dulcimerlex!
If you read through some of the threads that vinyldavid has posted in (it's going to take a while!) you will soon realize that many of us have really come to appreciate and enjoy David. He has also earned the respect of a lot of us that are a lot older than he is. That is not always an easy thing to do. I think it is safe to say that most of us are old enough to be his father, and some his grandfather - but I won't name any names. :D He is a very refreshing young man that stands head and shoulders above so many others his age. Give him a chance to learn from his mistakes, and if he is like the rest of us, there will be some, you two can have a great future.
Now David, go slow, listen to her and learn. You have something very special there. I can tell from that beautiful picture.

Welcome and hope you enjoy your time here also. David is years ahead of this game of audio than many of us where at his age and reflects if well. It looks like he is in picking nice girls too. Some guys are just quick learners I guess. I understand you both are very young, so I will give you a bit of advice if you don't mind. I hope you both live and learn from each other for years to come if that is your wishes. If it is, compromise is the key along with understanding. Best wishes.

I play a musical instrument called the hammered dulcimer.Being from the North Carolina Mountains, I'm quite familiar with both lap and hammered dulcimers, and have played one myself. Beautiful instrument, it can make both the most cheerful and the most melancholy sounds. Nice choice.

That album is also on iTunes, if you want to sample more tracks.

David has assimilated himself around here quite quickly, dove right in head first!
Hope you do the same, and it's nice to see another lady join up with us cranky old miscreants!
And before any gets to scratching themselves, wondering what the hell a Miscreant is...
miscreant \MIS-kree-uhnt\, adjective:
1. Disbelieving; heretical.
2. Depraved; behaving badly.
noun:
1. A disbeliever; a heretic.
2. A scoundrel; an evildoer; a villain.

I LOVE the hammered dulcimer! Every Christmas in San Francisco there is at least one hammered dulcimer artist playing at Embarcadero Center and Union Square for the shoppers. Sometimes they're in the BART station too! It's a really neat part of Christmas in San Francisco. Really a nice sound!

Welcome to AK! :thmbsp:
All of us aging fogeys around here are happy to welcome nice young whippersnapper types to AK, especially when they are cute and play something as cool as a hammered dulcimer. Organ-grinders and hurdy-gurdy players are also very welcome.
As for that idea of electrifying the dulcimer and running it through effects pedals, DO IT!!! Just try it out for fun at first. Experiment with various effects until you understand how to make some interesting and good new sounds come out of it, Then practice until you can completely control and reproduce those effects. Then work them into a catchy old-made-new tune/arrangement and record a demo. You might well become rich and famous off it. No one else is doing it, and anything new that is also good will find a following, quickly enough. You have a good look and a good instrument with a twist to it for promotion, and you will NOT have to resort to wet T-shirts like Vanessa Mae, or anything remotely like that. Worth a try. At worst, you have a few laughs and groans and some fun trying. At best, well .. like I said, it COULD make you rich and famous!

Hello.
My name is Alexis...
I'm vinyldavid's girlfriend.
I play a musical instrument called the hammered dulcimer.
Welcome, I'm also one of those "forty somethings" that have been impressed by David, now even more so!
A few weeks back I picked up a big lot of Vinyl, tons of Bluegrass & Folk. There are a bunch that feature the Hammer Dulcimer. I just grabbed 3 off the top:
The Wind That Shakes The Barley, John McCutcheon
Sounds Of The Smokies, Bill Davis and his Singing Dulcimer
Echoes From the Valley, Bill Davis and his Appalachian Dulcimer
There are probably at least 20 (that feature the Dulcimer) in total, maybe much more, all in VG+ To Mint! I'll go through the whole lot and let you know what else I find.
David, If you want, you are welcome to borrow them, let me know.

David, you should marry that girl . She sounds as sweet as they come and reminds me of my lovey wife. Don't let her get away!

Welcome, Alexis! Please put me on a list to hear your recordings when they are done! David is great guy. He reminds me of a very good friend of mine, even looks like him (when he was in High School!)

Welcome Alexis,
Hammered dulcimer is one of my favorite instruments! I first discovered it at a rennaisance festival, and I go to those mainly for the music anymore. Jem Moore is my favorite dulcimer artist. His style is kind of modern twists on old folk and classical themes.
You seem like a class act. I don't really know David but I wish you both much happiness!

ASk and you shall receive. Sound card comes in 2 days, and I recorded her playing 16 songs (some very short) on a 1800 foot Maxell UD35-90 tape at 15ips, and when i replayed it, WOW. AMAZING. Only one side is done, and I will be hopefully filling the other side as I can. I used a Shure Uniphone B mic (ancient) and EV N/D-50 mic (both borrowed from my school), with Tascam M30 mixer, and Teac A-3340S R2R
I can only hope that the greatness will carry over to the digital transfer.
BTW, thanks to 2dualsnotenough for the tape. :thmbsp:

I think it is because it stands in such contrast to all that we see and hear in the news lately. It's one of my favorite threads because it is all good and so refreshing. :thmbsp:
Somehow I don't thing we are done quite yet. :D
I think not.
There will be a YouTube video coming soon......hint hint it involves a dulcimer and a R2R. :D
