Okay I own a NAD 1020 preamp that I love. Although I've heard better sounding gear, it's the best I've actually owned. It currently is connected to the power amp section of my Superscope. My main source is vinyl and there was a marked improvement in clarity and noise floor when I bypassed the Superscope's internal preamp.

The other day I found out my friend's parents are selling a bunch of stuff and they are selling me a 1040 integrated. It's a good deal, and it's a Marantz, so even though I don't strictly need it I decided I couldn't pass up the opportunity to own a "real" Marantz. I have very efficient speakers so 20 wpc is more than plenty. It'll still be a week before I can take possession of it.`

I've been trying to read up on this amp but there isn't much information out there. I've read a few comments saying Marantz amps of this era have great phono stages, but do they actually? How will it stack up to the NAD? If the 1040 is like other Marantz integrateds I've seen, the preamp and power amp can be used on their own so I could in theory connect the NAD to the Marantz power amp.

Basically what I am trying to ask is, is the preamp of the Marantz going to be a contender to replace the NAD with, and thus sell the NAD? I also have another power amp coming, a DIY 41hz Amp6 15 + 15w class D, but it's not done yet and I won't have the time to get it together till june or july. With two power amps I want to eventually bi-amplify.

Later EDIT: The 1040 does not have a preamp-out poweramp-in loop, so you can't connect it to another preamp or power amp.

Hi Bikehorn!
I don't have a service manual for a 1040, but some Marantz's use 1 uF electrolytic or tantalum coupling caps on the input and/or output of both channels of the phono amp. These can be replaced with film caps of the same value. I used P10979-ND parts from Digikey.

This thread may give you some ideas.

I hope you like your 1040 as much as I like my 1030!
