View Full Version : My new CL aquired 2275 has issues!

I recently branched out from my traditional home territory of the Pioneer realm to grab a 2275 when it became available on the local CL. I got it for a very reasonable price, and now I am very glad I didn't pay any more than I did. It has issues!
1. This I found during the audition... the right channel is very weak and distorted when you first turn it on. After about 3-5 minutes it strengthens to about 90% of the left channel, but never quite gets to the strength or punch of the left channel.:headscrat
2. This did not crop up till a couple of days later.... the left channel cuts out at any given time. Not often....maybe once or twice in a 3 hour listening session. If you turn it up you can hear the music way in the background quite garbled like a bad connection. If you turn the receiver off and on again a few times it restores to normal.
3. And now for the reason it has been relegated to be out in my shop.
IT STINKS! When you fire it up and run it for a while it just plain smells bad. The only way I can describe it is like a musty basement that someone tried to clean up with a pine scent cleaner. What can I do to clean this up?
I am handy with a soldering iron, and have a DVM, but not much more equipment anymore. To me the issue 1 sounds like either a bad solder joint or a component (transistor or cap) that is going south. How do I find it? Issue 2 almost sounds like it could be a bad connection/dirty contact on a relay. Could it be that simple?:scratch2:
Then there is the smell..... Is that a deal breaker? It is bad enough that I don't want it in my office where I listen to music all day, much less anywhere where my dear wife with a much more critical nose might be.:yuck:
So where do I go from here?

Sounds like dirty controls or the relay.
Try cleaning all controls. If that does not work clean the relay contacts.
Check DC and offset.

1. Clean all the pots, connections and relays really well. My 2270 had no bass in the left channel, it was related to the bass knob.
3. Electronics parts cleaner. See http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1769000&postcount=6
Or ill take it off your hands heh, actually...ill be moving to minneapolis in June, so id offer to help fix it then.
Hope that helps.

For the smell stick some crumpled up newspaper inside the metal case (be careful) and wrap the receiver in a plastic bag. Newspaper is an excellent odor absorber. It should be noticeably better after 24 hours.

Thats a really cool idea! I used to keep the smell down in other stuff (boots, drawers, ect.) by sticking some dryer sheets in them. I imagine that might work here as well just make sure not run it with the sheets in there. (common sense I know but I imagine someone, somewhere....)

Same thing just poke holes in the plastic so the owner can breathe.

Thanks for all of the feedback! I cleaned the relay contacts and now the left channel no longer cuts out. :thmbsp:
I will be heading out to the guitar center on a Deoxit run.
Jonman, thanks for the PM. I need to replace one of the meter lamps and those instructions are very helpful.
I checked the offset and that seems good. Left = 6 mv & right = 2 mv.
Can anyone steer me to where I can download a service manual for a 2275, or do I need to go to one of those pay sights? I kinda got spoiled being able to download the service manuals for my Pioneer rigs right here at AK!
Then there is the smell thing..... rest assured jstang, the aforementioned dear wife with the much more critical nose would have no compunction informing her spouse if the smell originated with him! :twak:
Anyway....the metal top and bottom have been cleaned with a detergent and a lot of gummy grime has been removed. Another round to be done tonight. With the top and bottom off the aroma is much less offensive while it is powered up, so we are making progress there too.

My little Marantz 2015 stunk with cigarette smell. I opened it up and used rubbing alcohol with swabs to clean the interior. I had to do it twice and let it breath. Worked out fine.

The 2275 had a TSB with a newer relay. I will try and find my service manual later tonight. Is there any particular information you are looking for ?

I would like to be able to check/adjust offset and bias, at the very least. I also have my doubts that the right channel problems will be fixed by just cleaning the controls, but that remains to be seen, so a manual might well be necessary. Does anyone know of a good place to acquire a service manual?
