View Full Version : What vintage gear are you playing?
reneborg 11-04-2009, 08:32 AM .... It is so nice that my wife now wants me get rid of some of the other stuff that she used to like. I am wondering it that means that she wants me to replace it with nicer gear? Hmmmm... :D
I think she must -- and you gotta keep the wife happy, so what are you waiting for!? :D
reneborg 11-04-2009, 08:36 AM My main system now is:
Yamaha M-4 amp
Yamaha A-1 (running as preamp)
Yamaha T-80 tuner (also a couple of others I rotate in)
Nakamichi MR-2 cassette
Spica TC-50 with Sub / or Thiel 04a or Realistic Optimus 5b (rotated)
Thorens TD-166 Mk II
AKG 240 headphones
Not vintage -- NAD 514 CD player
Edriz 11-04-2009, 08:56 AM It's all in the Sig Block

I wish desire and finances would go hand in hand, but most of the time it seems like they are diametrically opposed. I guess that is one of the reasons why I got into vintage gear in the first place! (before realizing just how killer the sound could be, of course...)
On a separate note, what do you think of those AKG 240's? I got a pair of 701's for my birthday, but haven't quite broken them in yet. They are at about 15 hours and supposedly it takes 100 before they really start sounding nice.

sejose 11-06-2009, 12:06 AM Ahhh geez too much red wine to remember what is in the rotation right now but here goes; Sanyo Plus tuner and preamp with a NAD 2100 amp and Kenwood turntable carbon fiber arm and Sonus cart. Allison:4 speakers, Ampex AG440/445 open reel deck with a Teac A-4010S right on its heels.
olds442111 11-08-2009, 11:22 PM Presently, I'm running:
Nikko NR-1415 Receiver
Pioneer SG-9500 Equalizer
Pioneer RT-909 Reel to Reel
Marantz TT-1080 Turntable
Cerwin Vega VS-120 Speakers
Rectilinear High Boy Loudspeakers
Bose 601 Series 2 speakers ( not very impressive )
Thinking about adding a pair of Crown Amp/ Preamp. Not sure yet
Ohighway 11-09-2009, 12:54 AM Well the Klipschorns seem to have the flu or something. So, I'm listening to some -very- cosmetically challenged stacked Dynaco A25s. They're being fed by the equipment in my signature. Ok, well I did temporarily swap out the Denon TT for a Dual CS731Q.

vinylisfinal 11-09-2009, 01:36 AM oh yeah...and way too much in storage, i will post pics!
ctcdaggett 11-09-2009, 01:58 AM OK, how about a Marantz 7 (C), pair of Marantz 9's, a Marantz 16(b), 2 pair KLH-9's, and an Oracle Premiere-III? Add a Crown 822 & 724, 4 Ampex F44, AG 440C, and even a KLH-40 (1st Dolby R:R). Marantz amps and electrostats were purchased new, now you know my age. A 1979 Keith Monks keeps about 50K records in playable condition. Bob middle of mojave desert.
vibrato 11-13-2009, 04:56 AM Main system:
Fisher RS-1022 receiver
Technics SL-D3 turntable
Sony TC-R502 cassette
Philips universal player (temp for deceased Sony 5-disc changer)
Spica TC-50 (A), Kenwood JL-502 (B) speakers
Bedroom:
Akai SW-127 speakers driven and sourced by generic non-vintage gear until a) my Pioneer Elite SX-31 receiver gets fixed and b) I pick up two cheap vintage CD-only players (need new one for main system too).
Any suggestions for vintage CD players in the $0-$25 range?

Philips or Magnavox (made in Belgium), for example, the CD-350 should be in your price range but perhaps you are lucky and find a TOTL model!
riverrat 11-14-2009, 12:47 AM Life's journey has for the moment parked us in a rental house with most of our stuff, including my Totem speakers, in storage. And my fully recapped Sansui AU-D11 II amp is sitting in the garage, awaiting a trip to the tech in Portland for yet another repair. So I'm running a system that consists of part first string, part second string (or third string) gear:
Pioneer SA-7100 amp (garage sale, $10)
Pioneer PD-65 CDP (CL $175)
JBL 4311 speakers (CL, $50)
El Cheapo used USB DAC DiyEden SV4 or something like that ($90)
Toshiba laptop ($350 new)
Sansui TU-717 tuner, fully modded by PX ($400)
1 TB Mybook hard-drive w/~750gb of FLAC files ($100)
So for about $1200, I have a system that works pretty well. Not all that well balanced, to be sure, but it gets me through the day...
SoCal Sam 11-14-2009, 12:54 AM Today's systems I listened to:
Yamaha B-2
Sony CDP-X55ES
Yamaha NS-1000M
MC2100
Sony CDP-302
JBL L45 Flairs
Hafler DH-200
Hafler DH-101
Sony CDP-X55ES
Canton Fonum 251
Damon Hill 11-14-2009, 03:55 AM Hafler SE-100, modified with Jung Superregulators, sprinkled in some Black Gates and Schottky rectifiers with snubbers, planning to add some Vishay bulk foil resistors in the line amp
Heathkit AJ-1510, replaced some tantalum coupling caps and carbon film resistors with metal films, needs alignment, general replacement of all electrolytics and upgrade of detector opamp (709 used as pulse integrator)
Heathkit AA-1800, in the wings awaiting major restoration
Leach amplifier, version 4.5
Acoustic Research AR-11, rescued from Goodwill for $18, new woofer surrounds and polypropylene crossover caps
Can you tell I'm a poor audiophile, who spent more money on test equipment (let's not get started on >that<)?
hatrack71 11-14-2009, 07:52 AM V-M 816 console going into Klipsch Heresy speakers. Just running it to see if there are any problems. Surprisingly, the 6V6 power amp sounds very good. The pre seems to roll the bass off and accentuate the mids when turned up though. Like the Heresys need more mid.
In my living room, my newly rebuilt Scott 222c, Thorens td160, Rotel 855 cdp, EPI 100's

Where'd ya get the speaker stands? They look like they would be perfect for my "new" AR-2a's (once I convert them to-2ax's so they can sit vertically).

Mahalo!
jdurbin1 11-14-2009, 10:19 PM Listening to some baroque trumpet music on vinyl through my office system tonight...
Sony PS-X6 w/Shure V15VMR, dbx 3BX w/remote, Tandberg TR 2080, ADS L710 on 16" stands.
Sounding great as always!
Can't crank the other system in the room right now because one of my pair of Sony TA-N55ES amps is in protection, have to dig that out of the rack and pop a new preamp IC in it. Too bad, would be nice to have the L150A's playing along.
