Let us know what gear you're playing.
I've got five stereos set up.
The one playing right now consists of the Soundcraftsmen MA5002A 250 wpc amp controlled by the Kenwood Basic C-2 preamp. Turntable is a Technics SL-1300, tuner an Onkyo T-9. The other sources and speaker systems (JBL CF150) are newer than vintage.
What are you playing?

qboneus

currently playing:
Sansui 9090db and Sansui au-11000 biamped into Vandersteen 2 ci's, NEC cd-810.

Also running Epicure 100's driven by Musical fidelity A100 with old HK HD500 cd as source.

In my laundry room I am running a Sony str v5 with a pair of JBL 4311's and also a pair of Kabuki sansui 4 way six driver spks either 2500's or 3500's I can't remember right now.

Nice, qboneus!
I wonder how many are using 'newer' speaker systems with vintage gear? I think my CF150's were sold from the mid-90 into the 2000, but they are 'old fashioned' in a way-- massive 15-inch JBL woofer, 3-ways.
My other four stereos all have vintage speaker systems.
I know that BoldEagle considers matching damping factors is important in system synergy, so he recommends vintage with vintage, so to speak. But my systems are late-70s and 80s, so tend to match well with the speaker systems I have, mostly from the same period.

A Marantz 2325 with JBL 4333's, Thorens 125 with Shure V15 type III, Denon CD/cassette,White 4000 passive EQ's for my personal stereo,
A Marantz 2270 with JBL L-100's with Panasonic VCR/DVD player for family TV,
A Marantz 2245 with a Soundcraftsmen EQ into a Marantz 250 power amp with whatever "speakers de jour" come through the shop, and a Marantz CD player, for my office.
Being in the sound business does have it's perks, total cash outlay for all of the above-less than $1000.00
Having that "Blue Marantz glow" everywhere I go, priceless.

System number two up here in the living room consists of the Yamaha M-80 250 wpc amp, the Carver C-1 preamp, Technics ST-8080 tuner, and the Phase Linear P-530 speaker systems. Turntable is a late-1986 Denon DP-47F.

The third system is based around the Nikko NR-1015 85 wpc receiver, and a stacked pairing of the Marantz DS900 and Advent utility cab Loudspeakers.

Nice system, bolly! Are you using the amp section of the Kenwood on one pair of speakers?

Hey, you other guys, I'm really curious what you're playing. This is the vintage solid state forum, and I'm just really curious!

I have now got two stereos turned on and running. The first one up here I've mentioned, and now down in the family room the Kenwood KA-9100/KT-7500 and the JBL L100's. Both stereos are using their tuners on the same station.

Far out, nice stuff.
That's four KA9100/9150's guys are playing! Nice integrated, and we wonder why Kenwood 'gets no respect'?!

This is good gear, we don't need to apologize for running darn fine gear just because it's old!
I've got two superfine stereos playing right now. Down in the family room the Denon POA-2200/Luxman C-383 playing the HPM-900's, and up here the Yamaha M-80/Carver C-1 with the Phase Linear P-530's. This is excellent sound, my friends. Downstairs a T-9 tuner, up here the ST-8080 tuned to the same station.

Have it powerin' my NEW HPM-100's. Her pre-outs are connected to the Technics gear, and back into herself! That SE-A5 MK2 cranks my first pair of HPM-100's. I recently subbed a Sherwood S-5000II for the Technics. I enjoyed the sounds much better but couldn't get the dB level's I'm starting to get accustomed to. I really have to get my AU-D11 finished. BTW, I think I want Klipschhorns.

This is the KILLER combination of gear.Synergy overload.

Yamaha PX-3 Turntable(circa 1982)
Dynavector Karat Diamond Cartridge(circa 1983 design)
Yamaha C2x as Phono Stage(circa 1984)
Kenwood KA 9800 used as Preamp(1977)
Behringer Active Crossover(not vintage)
Kenwood Basic M1 Poweramp(circa 1983)Treble section
Kenwood Basic M2A Poweramp(circa 1984)Bass section
Altec Lansing Valencias(circa 1962) DIY activated

I've been trying different combinations of gear for the last year in an effort to unlock the potential of some truly classic equipment and I've got to say that the above combination is ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING.
I personally have not heard anything that approaches it anywhere.
I will admit to not hearing the current "audiophile megabuck rave" components. But I have had some good systems in the past and have listened to some well respected affordable and expensive systems/components at dealers/shows.I have NEVER heard anything that compells one to pay attention and just plain old shows music off like this system does.
Give it Large choir choral music or AC/DC or you name it,and you are in for a treat!
It's just so enjoyable that this quality of reproduction is obtainable from extremely affordable Vintage equipment.
Seek and you will find.
P.S The other great thing is this has all been achieved without any -mains conditioner, stock mains leads,el cheapo interconnects, and good solid WIRE(like ordinary).Which just allows me to laugh, laugh and laugh at all those poor suckers who fall for all the lies being bandied around.:) :)

HT setup in the den:

Source units:
Technics SL-23 with ADC ZLM cart and PlatterMatter mat
Pioneer CLD-1070 LD/CD player
Toshiba 2201 DVD player (hey, for DVDs, that thing is vintage now! :D )
Panasonic SVHS VCR (not vintage)
Sony SLHF-400 SuperBeta VCR
RCA SelectaVision CED player

Amps/processors:
Pioneer VSX-5000 Dolby Surround receiver (4 corners)
Onkyo TX-88 receiver (center and subwoofer)
Realistic car-stereo sub crossover with 12V power supply for sub channel
SAE 4-band parametric EQ on subwoofer channel

Speakers:
L, C and R in the front: EPI M150s
Rears: EPI M70s
Sub: home-built job with Dayton Thruster 8" woofer (rear-firing) and Madisound 15" passive radiator (down-firing).

Living room "music system":

Source Units:
AR-XA turntable with AT71ELC cart
Hitachi 12 disk CD changer (dual 6 disk magazines)
HK TD392 cassette deck (the MACK DADDY of cassette decks)

Amp: Technics SA-410 receiver

Speakers: Hand-built "Sandstones"... 24Hx10Wx16D cabinets, with 1987-vintage Audio Concepts AC7 (aka Vifa C17WG) woofers and Vifa D25AG35 tweeters. Image like a mofo, bass down to 30 Hz out of a 6"!

As soon as I can get it up and running, I'm planning on running a modified HK Citation 12 amp (with preferably, the Pass mosfet mod kit) and hopefully, a tube preamp. May wind up building the tube preamp myself. I'm also building a prototype speaker system for a model I plan to sell commercially; I'll probably wind up with the "test mules" in there, after I cosmetically finish the cabinets in some half-ass way... :D

Regards,
Gordon.

Krimney,
How do you like the 5781? Jon Tee just got his redone by Echo who found it a challenge. Mine gave me a fit awhile ago and I sidelined it but, the other night hooked it back up and all is well again. Possibly bad connector. Interesting that 3 on the board are using the amp.

I only have one system set up currently, everchanging as it is, it keeps improving!

System 1:

Kenwood KT-7550 tuner
Soundcraftsmen SP4001 pre/eq
Soundcraftsmen MA5002 amp
2pairs Pioneer HPM-100's

I prefer to listen to FM in mono, it reduces extraneous sounds. What I'm having difficulty with is that damn SP4001! Too many switches. I'm going to pull her out and sub in my Technics SU-A6 control-amp, just to "see".

System 2: (not set up this second)

Sansui G-5700 receiver (tuner)
Kenwood KA-9150 amp
Advent Loudspeaker (1974)
Dynaco A-25 speaker

Looks like I'll need a seperate tuner somehere in the near future. I'll hook this up somewhere and see how this one sounds!

I am getting the urge to find a nice looking turntable to complement the Pioneer SX-1010. I'll start going to flea markets.

I have a question.

What is the definition of "vintage" gear?

bully
08-08-2004, 11:43 AM
Read my 'sticky' post "Welcome ..."
Most of us would be thinking of the classic 70s stuff. But if it is stereo, we'll talk about it!
My separates gear is 80s, with a mid-90s Luxman preamp in one, and late-90s big JBL's in another.

I've got a couple of additions:

Bedroom--
Acurus A150 amp
SAE A7 as the pre
Pioneer CLD53
Pioneer HPM-100's

Listening Room--
nOrh SE9 amp
Audcom AP100 preamp
Pioneer CLD504
Altec Lansing Model 15's

Both of these are fantastic sounding systems IMHO. I am a little like Pete and have gear from different eras and really love to mix and match them.

I have 32 systems set up and a tester on the diningrffoom table. Though I really like the living room set, my fav is still the bedroom set::D

Pioneer QX-8000 Quad
Jbl L100's up front
AR 4X's in the back
Dual 1009 turntable
Miracord 50H turntable
Teac 460 Cassette
Technics 110 disc CD Player

Lots of the time I play it and sit in the livingroomn with this system off:

Mcintosh MA 6100 intergrated amp (front speakers)
Jbl L100's up front
Marantz 4070 (back speakers)
Dynaco A25's--they rock
Duals 1009 and a 1229 turntable
Teac 1230 and 7010 reel to reels
Teac 450 cassette
Sony CDR
RCA hifi VCR
Samsong DVD
Sony 26"monitor

Really enjoy this system too, the bedroom set puts me to sleep and is the wakeup set.

Guest room set

Pioneer QX-8000 in 2 channel
Dual 1010s turntable ( its like the on I had in high school )
Miracord 626 turntable...customer of mine was tossing it. free

this is a work in progress set, one of the channels cuts out and needs a look. Those can be a poblem on a quad. This Dual has a hum. Fall projects;)

Sitting on the diningroom table is my beloved Dual 1009F. It had developed a hum. Replaced the cart today( 8-8-04) and it seems happy. Will probably let go the Miracord 626 to make room for my 1009F. The Miracords if not trashed respond to tender loving care better:D The Duals are more finicky. Right my Dual stash are all working except the 1010s with its hum:D. The test amp on the table is a small Pioneer SX-450. Made in Korea and is on its way out. Wished it was the Japan model. Got a free Sony receiver that will become my tester.

All is well in Eric's Vintage Audio land.:D Pretty much have some fun stuff! As posted on the transistor radio site here, I am playing with portable radios. Would like to snare a Zenith Transceanic:D

This sticky: "This is the Vintage Solid State forum. Welcome aboard! "?

Yes, I did read it before I posted my question. All I got there was:

“just a vintage (solid state!)”

“'vintage' is a big & inclusive idea of audio.”

But your personal reply realy set me straight. Thanks!!

I've been plotting the layout for three switchers and still puzzling about what I use to tie them together as a control head. So 'vintage' at the moment is defined as an H472W Zenith Circle of Sound AM/FM electronic clock, which isn't bad in any terms.

So this is what I want to do:

Head unit

Switch 1
JVC Dual Cassette B-C-HX Pro (all recording from sources)
Pioneer Dual Cassette B-C-HX Pro (play/dubbing only, doesn't record from line in)
Sony CDP-70

Switch 2
VCR In-Out
1978 Bearcat radio scanner
Hallicrafters S-118 Mk II

(Switch 3)
Sansui 5050 (fronts)
Pioneer SX-3600 (centers)
harman/kardon 330B (rear/surround)

Somewhere I would like to use a Quad preamp-decoder as an option, but I believe my Sony SQD-2020 may have issues or I just haven't figured how to hook it...a MANUAL would be good (I'll try Sony).

I also have a Dolby Surround amp (RS), which would be 4.0 and circa 1995.

Speakers:

B-I-C Venturi Formula 2
Unknown 4 ways (12" woofer, 5" mid, (2) 2" tweeters
Advent (Intl Jensen) Baby Advent 2
Sony SS-U211 Towers (listed on cab as 200W)
"Johntzer (sp)" 1970's box design that I've seen in other versions unbranded (6" paper cone, fairly useful and sound okay). Had them secondhand for 10 years.
Mystery pair coming from my friend Cory's stash (he's owned a lot of nice ones too), hopefully in time for my Sansui's arrival Friday.

Living room speakers are Yamaha (1992) and Optimus satellites. For vintage there is RCA Victor X-1 JE (1960) 1951 MW Airline AM-FM mantel set, 1949-50? Airline BC table set, 1960's dual speaker model with CD markings, 1961 Silvertone AM clock radio, 1935 or 6 Silvertone 4589 with 4569 chassis and 12" speaker mod (not the best thing to do unless you want to rattle you AF tube away), Motorola C2W 2 AM Clock radio, 1955 GE Musaphonic 475 (dead after playing some and losing strength when warmed up), Heathkit AJ-14 FM stereo only SS tuner, Hoffman StereoFi phono console, tubed...I need stuff on it too. Sony-Superscope TC-900 mini reel on display, TC-800 tape console in the cellar, CFS-61S AM-FM Stereo/SW 1-2/Cassette recorder (boom box, 1982). Oh yeah, RC-15 remote control switch for the portable mini RTR still in the blister pack NOS. And two of those nifty Trump Electronics big heavy cassette portables with the microphone and one was the "Music sandwich" model that accepted AM, FM and Shortwave cassette shaped tuner packs (I always wanted one of those)!

Now, but for my address you know what to rob :lmao:

What vintage gear are you playing? Right now, this friday evening?

Danish national/public radio (which is not bad, nether the sound quality or the choice of music on this evenings program 3) via the tuner part of my Fisher 800-t and my little Braun tube amp csv-13 and a pair of AR-6's that sounds really great allthough they need new foam on the woofers. This is as vintage as it comes for me!

Peter, Denmark, where winter finally is around; we got a bit of (melting) snow today!

I have a Fisher 400 receiver connected to EV 12trxb's, and coming anyday now is a Scott 299B and Lt-110 tuner combo,,,to be joined by some Tannoy Monitor Gold 12's,,,

I have modern (kinda) Quad ESL-63's and the Fisher sounded awesome thru them.

I dont know if my main setup of Berning's (early 80's) qualifies as vintage/

I could hardly call myself a true Curator of Ancient Audio though I refused to replace my ancient and venerable receiver when it went out on me with the black box dreck being flogged at big box retailers or with the overpriced Oddiophile gear at alleged High End shops staffed with condescending teenagers whose sole job seems to be making customers feels like only fit to clean the shop's toilets with their tongues.

Today, the Legendary Nikko NR-1015 Receiver again provides all my listening enjoyment. Sources include the kinda vintage Dual CS 508 and the not-vintage-at-all Onkyo DX-7211 and Harman/Kardon CDR 26. Speaks are a pair of new Paradigm Mini Monitors V4 (with substantial crossover modifications to emphasize mid and bass ranges and take the bright edge off of the speaker).

At the same time, as an audio insurance policy, I've acquired a Sansui G8000 receiver which is now in the shop undergoing repair and possibly some updating. Nikko represents the edge of ultrabadness. Sansui G8000, when it's up and running, the outer limits.

Friday evening, need to calm down from the week!
My wife is out, so I have the house for my own. :)
So I placed 2 x 80mm vents on the back of my SX-5590 and listen 2 some rock tunes trough my canton speakers, cranks very well. :D at the big bass sometimes the lights go down a bit, thanks to th 1200W input power conumption of the SX-5590. :sigh:
And Music will never end, since I copied 45GB !! of MP3-Music (with high bitrate) from a fiend.
Oh, I forgot the cats, they were out after the first song :D

bozak ron - am surprised that you would run a $2500 cartridge in what is a $200 TT/TA combo. I catch flack for running my K-b ($700) in a PF-800 ($400), which many would consider the bare minimium for this level a cartridge. Same with your 9090DB phono-stage. Am sure you are leaving a very significant amount of the capabilities of a Grado Statement behind with your TT/TA and phono-stage combination.

I've recently gone through all three of my systems completely revamping everything. The result was that all three became nearly full vintage systems. Vintage being the official definition of 25 years to 50 years old (antique being older than that.)

Main System:

Marantz 3200
Fisher SA-16 (down for a couple more days)
Sony PS-X500 w/ Grado Black (Gold soon)
Tannoy Berkeleys (HPD385A)

Computer System:

Dynaco A-25s

Bedroom System (Period Specific):

Pioneer SX-535
Pioneer PL-115D
Pioneer HPM-100s

Charivari...have you posted pics of your Tannoys?? if no, can you do so? and also tell me how you like them?
I had posted pics, but they were lost with the database crash. I quite like the Tannoys, they are excellent speakers, but they can also be incredibly frustrating. Some speakers, like Magnepans, sound very good regardless of what you do to them. Tannoys, on the other hand, are very revealing particularly of any fault in the components ahead of them. They're very detailed and have incredible transients. Thanks in large part to the 15" cone that runs up into the midrange, instruments have the body that is lacking in small driver speakers, bass and cellos have wooden bodies behind the strings and piano is fantastic. The midrange can be a little odd to my ears. The horn tweeter in the middle can be a bit on the abrasive side, as it is a horn, so extra care must be taken in dealing with it, such as listening 15° off-axis as per the manual's instructions and watching how smooth your source equipment is. With CDs, this can be bad with the controls flat, though tubes and vinyl show just how very good these speakers can be.

I'm afraid that so far, I've only managed to occasionally glimpse what these speakers can do thanks to my room and equipment, but also to the cabinets that these drivers came in. There are days when I'd swear these speakers are dipoles thanks to how strongly the back panel resonates and the smallish size and ports muddy and hump the bass a bit too much for my tastes. While my older Maggies were much more "veiled" as the favorite term is, and it was obvious when I put the two against each other, I do miss them every so often due to their being the more musical speaker, so far. With proper cabinets (which I hope to soon build) and good electronics, the Tannoys should become much better speakers.

Good, because I have 100% confidence in the chain of hardware, especially the CD player and the preamp..no smoother sounding CDP around. At least your Tannoy's cbs seem somewhat bigger than what most people with monitor Golds and the such have to work with.

I may be getting a pair of cabs that are waaay larger than the crappy Mallorcan cabs I will have..

All of my systems mix old and fairly recent equipment liberally. Heck why not take advantage of the best (that you can afford) of both worlds. I have no vintage speakers. I think most of them don't age well ( suspensions dry out, surrounds rot, paper cones get soft etc.) and modern driver designs have given us sound quality that is superior in many cases than older designs at the same price point. I don't believe ,however, that a 250 watt Krell, Mark Levinson, or you Naim it high priced amp sounds appreciably different than a top of the line Yamaha, Onkyo Integra or Denon amp. Or for that matter a modern Rotel, Nad, Parasound or Adcom. CD players from the 80's by and large sucked so there is no point in using one unless you treasure nostalgia over sound. OTOH, I think todays sub $1000 turntables offer nothing that you can't get with a vintage table at half that or less. Having said all that here are my systems.

Dynaco(Panor) PAS 4 tube full function preamp

PSB Stratus Gold i

Living room:
Marantz 2216
Sony entry level carousel CD player
DIY 6.5" two ways w/Vifa drivers that I would be OK with as my only speakers.

Workshop:
Onkyo TX2000
Marantz CC4300 CD player
Cambridge Soundworks Newton M50's (not great speakers for their asking price but for the $89 plus shipping I paid they are amazing)
Dual CS5000/Ortofon X5MC (temporary residence whilst dubbing LP's to CD for the car.)

Garage:
Dynaco Pat 4 pre
Alesis RA100 amp

Cambridge Soundworks Model 17 (not all that refined but acceptable sound and rugged power handling for blasting out blues while washing cars)

Lemme see here.

In the livingroom I have two stereos. The Yamaha M-80 controlled by the Carver C-1, power running to the Phase Linear P-530s Denon DP-47F, Technics' ST-8080, a Technics' `SL-PG340, and an Aiwa AD-S750 Dolby S deck.
The other stereo up here mates the Soundcraftsmen DX4200 controlling the Soundcraftsmen PA5001, driving big JBL CF150s.

In the diningroom I run the Nikko NR-1015 85 wpc receiver with an RS-928S cassette deck and a cdplayer. The NR-1015 is driving two pairs of speaker systems: the Adven Loudspeaker in the utility cabinets and the Marantz DS-900.

Down in the lower level family room I have two stereos. The big one is comprised of the Denon POA-2200 200 wpc, controlled by the Luxman C-383 preamp, Onkyo T-80 tuner, a Sony cdplayer and a cassette deck that escapes me, although a Denon or an Onkyo is tickling my mind.
The other stereo is more flexible in its componets. Currently a Technics' New Class A integrated amp, the SU-G91, 130 wpc, driving a pair of JBL L100 Centuries, and a Sony cdplayer.

Plus, I have vintage gear hiding out that have not been in a system for a while. Guess I should sell some of it.

After I got mine overhauled I was amazed at the sound I enjoy from this rig compared with the alleged High End gear I auditioned while Nikko was in the hospital. It may be different but, in terms of detail and accurate presentation, it ain't no way inferior.

Hiya, PeterF' I agree that the NR-1015 is an excellent receiver. I think it rates as among the best 70-100 wpc receivers.
This is the smallest receiver I still have. Not counting the very nice, 1990-91 NAD 7100, a 60 wpc piece that plays bigger than its rated power output. I also have the little giant killer NAD 3020 integrated amp.

Hi, I'm new here...

I'm from The Netherlands, so I collected a lot of early seventies Philips gear, like Motional Feedback speakers, preamps and so on.

My main system consists of the following:

Denon DCD-1015 CD player
http://members.home.nl/lucmiller/denon%20cd%20outside.jpg

Akai GX-210D R2R deck
and two massive Philips Direct Drive cassettedecks. I'm not sure if these have been sold in the USA, so I will upload more pics if I get my FTP server up and running.

My speakers are I.M.F. Electronics SuperCompact mk.I

If you have any questions about old Philips equipment, I can translate alot of info from Dutch websites.

Love that Philips stuff (especially that int-amp with the round meter dials). I'd almost forgotten about their "hi-fi" logo.

I currently doing a lot of listening in my office to a H/K Citation Twelve amp running through a hafler DH-101 pre, pumping out through some original EPI-150 speakers.

Hello MCS Guy, I just came across an MCS 3233 Receiver, MCS 6601 Turntable and MCS 3570 Tape Deck in a nice older lady's basement. She is the original owner and wants to sell them. I don't need them, otherwise I would buy them. I'd like to help her sell them. I did a basic internet search and they go for a few bucks, not a lot, but a little bit. She's the original owner, they are mint, and since they all match - it seems like she should be able to get a decent price. What do you think? I don't know if she has the manuals, but I'll check.

Right now, I'm using my Bryston 2B for my amp, Sanyo Plus T55 tuner, Plus C55 preamp, Ampex AG440/445 R2R, Kenwood KD500 TT, Advent 100A Dolby, Allison Four speakers. Havent got my Pioneer CT-F1250 cassette up and running yet, and my Sanyo amp Plus P55 is almost ready to run. All pretty much 1979 vintage (except for the Ampex and the Bryston).

Not to be outdone, my oscilloscope is a 50s vintage Heathkit that is almost ready to go, to help me figure out the issue with my Sanyo Plus P55 amp.

I just like vintage stuff. At some point I'll score a Dynaco ST70 to step into the tube stuff. I do have a Stereo 120 Dynaco awaiting refurb. Looking forward to bringing that into the mix as well!

Most of what I own/play with is vintage. It is largely hand me down or garage sale stuff.

Lately, I've been spending time listening to several systems in my utility room where my desk is located. The main system there is based on an old 1963 McIntosh MA230 integrated with EPI 70C, Genesis Model 10 or ADS 710 speakers.

Other older/vintage stuff I use pretty regularly includes:

Speakers
Minimus 7
ADS 200c
Spendor SA2
Mono JBL 12", bullet tweeter and xover
Receivers
HK 350i
Sherwood S8900A
Nikko STA 8010

Tuners
Sony ST-J60
NAD 4020
Yamaha T300

Rotel RP1000TT

Nak 500

My office rig has the wonderful and mighty 185 wpc Marantz 2385 receiver :thmbsp: powering some Monitor Audio Bronze 2 speakers. The tuner section does a great job pulling in KUSC's classical broadcasts. The plan is to replace the Bronze 2's with some great-looking AR3a's. Eventually a Dual 1218 that was my father's will take up residence here too. The living room has a Kenwood KR-9600 and two sets of vintage speakers not yet set up, but waiting. The speakers are JBL's, a pair of 4813a's and a set of L100t3's.:music: The t3's are in black ash, supposedly a sign that they were sold exclusively to JBL employees. Can't prove it by me, but that's what the seller said. :scratch2:

As I type this, Creedence Clearwater Revival is providing the music courtesy of a Music Hall Mavervick:thumbsdn: non-superaudio cd player (the superaudio capability was nonfunctional from day one, despite two trips to repair service ). However, CCR always worked, as they are doing right now . . . :banana:Proud Mary . . . Ok, My system isnt even close to being as impressive as some of the many systems here but here goes anyways. This is my main system:

Rambler SA-3000 Integrated Amp
Toshiba Aurex PC-X88AD Cassette deck
Teac T-505 Tuner (Digital and analogue readout!)
Sony CDP-315 5 Disk CD changer.
200W Teac speakers (No model No, has "made under license of Polk audio" on them)

A Garrard 6.300 awaiting a stylus to join the system.

I'm happy with it considering it all was very cheap, the most expensive bing the cassette deck for $36. I did have a Technics tuner, its sound was a bit better than the TEAC but the transformer inside it vibrated and was extremely annoying.

Wow, I thought I had some nice gear until I read all these posts. What I don't understand is, why do some of you guys have soooo many stereo systems?

My wife keeps asking me this too. Besides what I have in my signature, I also have a Pioneer SX-980 and a Pioneer RG-2. I may keep building that into a complete stereo but I am looking for a different turntable, the Sanyo Q50 and I still want a Pioneer SG-9800 for my current system. My existing TT and EQ will go with the SX-980.

I guess if I had a garage and it was heated I would want a stereo in there also so I guess I answered my own question. I really don't spend alot of time in the bedroom so it would be a waste in there. Hell, I got a 32" TV in the bedroom and it's only been on when I watch wrestling on my Plasma. The wife hates wrestling so she goes in the BR and watches TV in there!

Sansui AU-D11 II integrated amp (completely recapped)
Sony DVP-S9000 ES SACD/CD
Sony SCD-222 ES changer > Entech 203 DAC
Onkyo T-9 tuner
Totem Sttaf speakers

Office:
Sansui B-2102 power amp
Yamaha C-4 pre
Marantz 20 tuner (w/ BEAUTIFUL Rob/merrylander custom cherry case!)
Kenwood L-O1T tuner
Denon DCD-1560 CDP
DIYeden SVDAC04-U USB DAC
Yamaha NS-30T speakers
JBL 4311s (currently not hooked up)

TV Room
Midgrade Onkyo AV receiver, circa 2003
Sony DVp-755 DVD/CD/SACD
Sony ST-A6B tuner
Low end Sony speakers

Garage
Pioneer SA-7100
Onkyo cassette deck, can't remember model just now
Onkyo T-4 tuner
Those el cheapo Best Buy Insignia speakers

Closet pile (hoaders delite):
Kenwood KT-7500
Kenwood KT-3500
Sansui C-2101 (on selling block)
Onkyo T-9 (listed on eBay as "pristine", NOT!!!)

Now some might say these are some odd combinations, and I would agree. There are several reasons- WAF issues/space in the living room is one big one. Also, some of this gear is in less than completely up to par operating and/or cosmetic condition- e.g. the B-2102 amp got beat to shit in shipping- meters don't work, the C4 pre is quite a bit louder in one channel so the balance needs to be turned way to one side, etc.

The tuner situation is a little harder to explain- why on earth would the lowly Onkyo T-9 pull in NPR better than the mighty Kenwood L-O1T? Especially since the latter has been modded and aligned by a previous owner? Not sure about this- one big reason might be the piece of wire I'm using for an antenna. We're now in the process of trying to sell our house (yeah right, in this market?) so an outdoor antenna is not happening just now.

Future plans for main system:
Sansui AU-D11 II amp
Sony scdxa9000es CD/SACD player (or similar that will also play CDRs)
Yaquin tube buffer?
Kenwood L-01T tuner/Marantz 20 tuner with some kind of DECENT OUTDOOR ANTENNA
Musical Fidelity V-DAC (USB, will also run CDP through this)
Laptop or small all-in-one PC w/external drive filled with FLAC files

Plan is to move mainly to a PC based music server, hard-wired (I'm old school) but retain ability to play CDs, SACDs and CDRs (the Sony DVP 9000 won't play CDRs) and have tuners to play with...

Since my system has changed so much since my last post on this thread(Post # 21):

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=133480&postcount=21

I thought I'd update the list.

The Yamaha PX-3 turntable is no longer used(I still own it),it was replaced by a Yamaha PX-2,and within the last year the PX-2 was replaced by a Yamaha GT 2000.

The Dynavector Karat Diamond 17D Mk II cartridge(which I still own)is no longer used.It was replaced 8 months ago by a Soundsmith 'The Voice'(Ebony).

The Yamaha C2x which I used as a phono stage is no longer used(I still own it).It was replaced by a Dynavector P-75(which I still own)and 16 months ago,the P-75 was replaced by a Simaudio Moon LP 5.3 phono stage.

The Kenwood KA 9800 integrated amp(which I still own)that I was using as a preamp was replaced by a stock Kenwood 700C preamp(which I still own). The stock Kenwood 700c was replaced by an EchoWars modified Kenwood 700C(which I still own).A brief flirtation with an Onkyo P-303 was had,the EW 700C returned. Then 16 months ago I forwent all active preamplification and settled on a 'Lightspeed' passive attenuator. This I used with a Burson buffer until about 8 weeks ago when I discovered that the Lightspeed operated perfectly in this present system without the need for a buffer.

The Behringer active crossover(which I still own)has been replaced by the Accuphase F-25.

The Kenwood Basic M1 poweramp(which I still own)that I used on the Treble-leg of my diy activated speaker system,was replaced by the Yamaha B-2(which I still own).The Yamaha B-2 was replaced by a Kenwood L-A1 integrated(which I still own).The Kenwood L-A1 was replaced by a Kenwood L-1000M.

The Kenwood M-2 poweramp(which I still own)that I used on the bass leg of my diy activated speaker system stayed in the system until October last year when I replaced it with a pair of Denon POA-4400 monoblocks. The Denon monoblocks were replaced for the Kenwood Basic M2 to resume it's spot.About 2 months ago a second Kenwood L-1000M took over duty as the Bass poweramp in the Bass-leg of the diy activated speaker system.

The speakers are still my diy activated Altec Valencias.

I raved about the previous system.Indeed there was much to like about the sound of it.

Each of the substitutions I've listed above changed the sound of the system. Some for better(most of them). The least successful substitution was the Denon Monoblocks taking the place of the Kenwood Basic M2(not to be mistaken for the Kenwood Basic M2A).The Denons aren't BAD.The Kenwood Basic M2 is(in my opinion) a very capable inexpensive high quality amp when used as a bass amp, which is the only way that I have used it..

I listened last night to an album that I haven't listened-to for a few years. The album was Oingo Boingo's 'Dead Man's Party'.I've had this album in my collection for over 23 years. In all of my previous systems including the one I posted earlier in this thread(and linked above) this album reproduces sounding 'thin'.It was mixed with an emphasis on the brighter instruments playing in their treble range. It was one of those albums which had a consistant brightish sound across all of the systems in which I'd used it during the 23-or so years I've owned it.
Playing Dead Man's Party on my system last night was like hearing it for the first time. The same overall mix was there, but now there was a much better bass-line to underpin it and a whole layer/layers of subtlety that previous systems had failed to resolve.

My present system(other than the Altec Valencia speakers)has all been acquired during 2008 and 2009.This is what is displayed in my listed signature below.I can honestly say that each of the components, each of the individual components, was a marked improvement over the already capable components which they replaced. This wholesale improvement achieved by each individual component, has lifted the level of performance as a system markedly.

I have noticed that musical passages which didn't draw my attention(particularly)now have me fascinated by the interplay between particular elements(players/instruments).What was previously(for example)a somewhat repetitive jazz drum solo, now reveals itself to be a masterwork of fine variation between bars, each bar varying ever so slightly from the previous one.Bringing the drum solo into a realm of masterful interpretation/manipulation of time itself. This has been the reason for my(now over)40 year interest in Hi-Fi.The quest to get closer to the Music.

The Quest continues........ :D :thmbsp:

I've been playing a Soundcraftsmen MA5002A with a Yamaha C50 Preamp going into Phase Linear P580 (Pioneer) since 1982. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a Soundcraftsmen DX 4200 Preamp/EQ. I got tired of fixing the Yamaha. It always ran hot and I knew from day one that heat was going to kill it. I did get 26 years out of it, so it does not owe me anything. I wanted the DX4200 back in 82, but it was $699 and the C50 was $550, more in my price range. Thank god for eBay, I found a DX4200 in near perfect shape. It looks like it sat in a box for the last 20 years. Anyway, that's what I've been using along with a Technics TT and a Denon CD player (DCD1700, skips like crazy !).

Well my systems can change rapidly depending on what I find:
HT setup currently has
Technics Sa ex500 with suround system comprising of ADS CM 5 fronts Awai surounds sony CN350 center and ADS 300 watt 12 subwoofer with Sony CDP 70 cd player ( TV is a 46" regza)

Mancave system:
Alternates often: TT Either Dual 1219 or Technics SL5 ,Amp either HK330c, Carver 6250, Sherwood S 7450 cp, the Technics VSX 5000 is currently on deck right as an experiment with newer stuff and because it has the pins in the back that alow me to insert my Pioneer 900 equalizer into circuit as opposed to using tape in out as with the others( sounds real fine!) Speakers: Large vinatage Sansui floor standers currently Pioneer HPM 100's CD player either Technics PD607 or Sony C7esd, Tape one of three Teac Reel to reels 6300 ,6010, 4300, cassete CT F500 (2) oh yeah no name brand CD player burner for burning that vinyl to listen to in car!
plus stuff more I probably forgot about.

Bedroom system? not yet but I am sure I could put one together real quick

I have to mention it's a good thing the good stuff only comes my way once in a while or I would be up to my arse and divorced by now

Me? Sheesh... I was a hi-fi junkie back in the early 80s, and still use some pieces from that era:

source:
Sony PS-X70 Turntable (bought used in 1984)
Shure V-15 Vmr cartridge (bought new)
Sony X7ESD CD player (bought new - weighs over 30 lbs!)

preamps:
Audire Diffet (bought used in 1982)
Phase Linear 3000 series II (garage sale score)

amps:
B&K TX4430 (bought new)
Apt Model 1 (bought new)
Bryston 4B (bought used in 1985 - free warranty rebuild in 1992)
Phase Linear 700 series II (garage sale score)

speakers:
Bose 901 series III (craigslist score)

The speakers? Yeah, not audiophile-grade, but for right now, they're really fun.

And yeah... a lot of this stuff I bought new. Sigh. I'm an old fart.

I have too many pieces sitting in closets or otherwize. I just hooked up a Yammie CR 840 freebie receiver to the PC in the den- I'm using the dreaded Insignia speakers right now- though I may swap for the NLA's in the bedroom- never turn that on anyway. Then I have the Beast-a BGW 500D I dragged home last week. It's kicked my Magnestand MMGs up quite a notch- whole house music with the side benefit of space heating in the chilly basement!

I love my vintage gear, especially my Sansui setup. It is so nice that my wife now wants me get rid of some of the other stuff that she used to like. I am wondering it that means that she wants me to replace it with nicer gear? Hmmmm... :D

Main Setup:
*Sansui AU-9500/TU-9500
*Pioneer PL-600 TT with a Stanton 881S (soon replacing the stylus and trying out a Denon DL-160 cart on it)
*Sansui SP-5500 speakers (absolutely unbelievable in my opinion, especially paired with the AU-9500)

Bedroom:
*Magnavox Astrosonic console from 1965 (This is the main victim of the Sansui and might get the hook here pretty soon. My wife used to like it until she heard the other stuff, and now can't stand to listen to it. It will probably be replaced with my old Marantz 1060 and Polk Monitor 10s when I get the time)
*Elac Miracord 50H/Grado Black cart with a separate phono amp (nothing special) hooked into the console for better analog playback
*Apple Airport also hooked into the console for wireless streaming of iTunes collection

Baby's room (!):
*Fisher 200T solid state receiver
*Fisher XP-6B speakers
(The sound on this is very warm and lush--my wife really loves it, and thought I should set it up for our baby. We play music for the little guy all of the time. I do need to go through the 200T and clean the pots among other things, though. I just think it is cool that we are running vintage gear for the baby as well...)

The System the gets the most use, my Vinyl setup

Pioneer SX-450
Dynaco A25's
A DIY TT with a motor and plater from a Sansui SR-535, a DIY unipivot arm, and a great Sumiko Andante P76 cartridge (single best component in my system)
Grado SR-80 cans get switched out with Some Senn's every once in a while

The little Pioneer does wonders with the Dynaco's, a very good combo for very little money imho. Takes me away from this world an hour or so a day:)
