The body is gold and the stylus is white with a blut dot in the upper left on the front...

The stylus is shot, but is the cart any good?

It's the one that came with the Shure arm on my Russco CueMaster.

It's a 500-series cartridge (looks like an AL-500B), and the old stylus looks like the older spherical version. All the bodies in the 500-range are technically equal, as far as I know, so any 500 styli will work fine. The elliptical D50E MK II stylus is pretty good, and can still be bought cheap (It got discontinued about a year ago).

Hi vinyldavid,

You have an early Stanton 500 cartridge with a later 500AL stylus. It's a good performer with a better grade stylus installed. The present P-Mount Stanton stylus will fit your 500 and offer you an elliptical stylus and 1-1.5 grams VTF (Vertical Tracking Force). It sounds excellent and tracks amazingly well for it's class. This upgrade stylus is still available from Stanton.

Thank you very much! :thmbsp:

Could this be used as a dedicated cart for 78 playback?

You can buy a 78 stylus for the cartridge from KAB but it's 49.00. It seems the 78 stylus will fit any Stanton 500 series.

I agree with all here. Defintely a Stanton 500 cartridge with the 500AL stylus.

You can upgrade with the Stanton D50EE stylus (discontinued by available) or the D71EE (p-mount stylus) will also fit. Both are around $20.

The Stanton D5827 stylus will do a fine job for 78 rpm discs. It's a 2.7 mil conical. KAB also offers a line of custom sized styli for 78's. Pricey (averaging $150) but they can make a world of difference depending on the era of the 78 and the wear pattern.

Garage-a-records also has a few 78 styli for the Stanton 500. You have lots of options. Have fun.

Wow,

I have the same exact problem. my cart only says "Stanton 500" and my stylus looks to be exactly the same. I've been trying to figure out what it was so i could replace it. Thanks!!!

Yes, it is the same 500. That is a stylized "S" on the finger hold.

Hi,

D 50 E Mk II stylus is a fine upgrade. You can track this one at 1-1.5 grams VTF. You can also get a 78 RPM stylus for it. It's an excellent cartridge.
