Although it is a slight rough sound to it, it only does it until the arm is released to set down on the album and then it totally disappears. It does it while in the up position from the start until it releases to set down. Any ideas what it could be before I take it apart to investigate? I suppose it can't be good to let it continue in this manner, right? Any other owners notice this slight sound when their arm is in the "up" position?

I really can't think why this should occur only with the arm in the UP position, in fact it may well be occuring even during playback but because the movement is so slow you don't hear anything.

But even before the arm makes it to the platter you can hear it cease before it touches the album. I will investigate further into this occurrence and see if I can locate it.

Is the sound coming tru the speakers or only from the arm movement/?

It's coming from the table. I'm starting to think its the motor that moves the arm assembly if their is one cause the table is dead quiet with the arm down and platter spinning.

Look for the thread "My new PX-2" there are pictures of both the PX-2 and PX-3 arm assemblies, the PX-3 motor drives an idler that in turn drives the belt roller, could be either of those bearings.

Thanks, maybe a touch of lubricant can cure it. What would be a good flavor?

White lithium grease or 3-in-1 oil.

When the PX-3 arm motor is running fast (moving into position from rest/stop) then it do make some noise, but it is quiet during actual play. In any case a lube job will do it good, also make sure the belt is tight.

Noisy while moving and at rest, only quiet in the play position ( going down to the LP and setting on the LP).

At rest?

Do you say that the arm motor is running when the arm is all the way to the right after a play and when you turn the tt on?

If yes, then it sounds like a sensor that is out of place and/or a woren belt.

Thats it, but how could a worn belt cause it? The sensors sense off the belt?

There are three position sensors that control where the arm drops and where the arm lifts at the end. There is the other sensor that controls the arm lateral movement. If the arm drops at the right spot (30cm or 17cm) then those sensors are good as they must have stopped the belt motor else the arm would not drop. Same deal if it lifts at the end and moves back to rest.

If the arm tracks the record then that sensor and the motor are doing what they are designed to do. This leaves only the belt rollers and drive assembly as the problem. Sorry, but you are going to have to open it up and look.

Well, I've had it apart before so I guess one more time won't kill me. I'm just hoping that I can get it to operate when the arm ass. is out of the deck so I can see whats going on.

I agree merrylander, but the thing with the arm motor keep running when the arm is all the way to the right seems to be a problem with the right limit switch not turning off the motor.

But it all might be fixed by cleaning and tighten of the belt (the most common problem with the PX- line), a lube job would also do good.

Moving the arm outside the cabinet is no problem, see merrylanders PX-2 thread, it can be done with a 9V battery.

Guess I missed that part, those limit switches have a nylon piece on the end that may have broken off, if that has happened it should be inside the chassis somewhere, a little crazy glue can fix that, or just bend the flat arm of the micro switch.

Will check it all out this weekend and report back.
