I hit a long awaited neighborhood sale today.

My nephew got a jump start and hit this sale last night and pulled away with a NAD 3020 and 4020 for $55.

I headed out with my brother and dad this morning -not knowing what to expect since they had opened the night before.

My dad scored a Denon DCD-810 for $5. It looked as if it was hardly used. My brother scored a Denon DR-M400 at a different sale across the street for $5. (He actually did a body block on me BEFORE he saw the deck.) Not bad and actually kind of enjoyable to see others get some nice equipment. Goodness knows I don't need anything. ;)

Shortly later, and running out of time before we had to head out to meet Mom and my sister for lunch (it is my brother's birthday today). I found a really cool portable. JVC 9475JW -receives shortwave and switches for normal and high bias cassettes. It needs quite a bit of cleaning up, but I got it for $12. See pics below. (Note the very cool vu power meters!)

We went to lunch and returned for only a short time after lunch as I had to pick up my oldest daughter from school. I decided to bring both girls back to the sales and hit an Estate Sale I had passed a few times during the day.

So, it's about 4:00pm and I'm walk into the house and the guy says, "It's the 2nd day of the sale, so everything is 1/3 off." Cool, but I'm not expecting much. I see a TV with VCR and a tag that says, "TV and CD Player -$75". While there was a remote and manual for a DCM-440, there was only the older Mits 20" and generic VCR. No CD Player. The lady apologized for the mix up and suggested I head downstairs to see what I can find.

I head down and round the corner and see a couple pairs of speakers. The first pair was a crappy old pair of bookshelf speakers. On top it said, "Philco B&B speakers -$32.50" ($21.45 w/ 2nd day discount). So, I go to check out the other speakers right next to them. On the top it says, "Black Tower Speakers -$57.50" ($37.95 w/ 2nd day discount). I tilt the speaker to take a look at the back and I read "Snell Type J IV".

Hmmmmmm....:scratch2:....decisions, decisions!

I QUICKLY go find assistance and get the speakers marked "sold" and go off to do some other hunting. No other audio to be found, but I did find 14 variety of Type II blank cassettes (already recorded) Mostly Maxell XL-II and TDK-SA. All priced at $0.10 each (total of $0.93 for all 14).

Anyway, I bring the speakers and cassettes up and check out for $39.26.

Not bad if i do say so myself!

I was only slightly dissappointed to get home to find both woofers bad -one had a tear in the surround and the other was DOA. I still would have bought it. The cabinets are in very nice shape. Sadly, the woofers are $149 each from Snell. I might be able to get them a bit cheaper, but we'll see. I may have to go for a rebuild.

(Also scored a Panasonic SL-S290 portable CD player for $2 (w/ A/C adaptor) and 4 more Type II cassettes -including one SA-X and XL-IIS- for $1)

Just discovered that I had not tightened down the binding posts for the woofer. That makes only one woofer bad. :)

It's Friday, I had seen an estate sale sign on my way home last night so I thought I'd head over at 8:00 when it opened. Entering the house with a couple of other folks, I saw 2 pair of speakers and a couple of bins of Cd's. One set of speakers has a tag that says "Broken, Free" I remove the grills and see holes in the surround foam , but good looking 8" woofers, however no name on the fronts. I flip them over and read "Snell Model E" on the back. I told the woman that I'd take them. The second set of speakers turned out to be a pair of JBL L100T's, also in need of surrounds. The son of the former owner said that his dad had loved good audio, and that he would take $50.00 each for the JBL's. I had to go home to get my Element to haul those monsters, but The woofers are already out and on the way to be refoamed. An excellent start to the Memorial Day weekend.

Wow! Great score on the E's. (I'm not that familiar with JBL to comment.)

Which series of "E" did you get? They are all wonderful.

I'm still looking for an 'in' to get new woofers for my J's. I'm close, but am waiting for info.

I can get them refoamed locally for $75 and the woofers list at $150 each on the Snell website. We'll see.

Is the foam old and crumbly or is it just a tear in the surround? If its just a tear could you maybe mend it with some silicone?

There is a tear -all the way around in one speaker -and just beginning in the other.

I can't imagine that the voice coils would be lined up with just silicone -let alone hold.

What's your experience?
