I have a recently purchased a Plasma TV and a Pioneer VSX-91TXH - Pioneer VSX-9120TXH in Canada – to run it all. I know you guys think this receiver is probably a little low end but it is what I can afford. It replaces the old Sansui AU-X1 integrated amp that has been the hart of my system for nigh on 30 years It died and that is that, so time to move on. OK my question is I have a good pair of klipsch Heresy speakers and I am currently listening in stereo. What next, should I get a subwoofer and wait to slowly add speakers as I can afford them? Or just buy a 5.1 speaker set with subwoofer, and just put the klipch’s aside. I am retired and living on a fixed (read we are poor) income so I don’t have a lot to spend. Maybe $400 I do understand the concept that good speakers can make a lower end receiver sound good. So think that a subwoofer in the price range would be a good place to start fleshing out my new system. What do you guys think?

I thought long and hard about it but decided to donate the amp to an electroncs school so at least it is still getting some good use. they were very happy to receive it. :tresbon:

I run my HT with two speaker front and using the phantom center channel. I like it better than a separate center channel. Your Heresy's should suffice for that use. The addition of a sub adds a lot to the program, IMO and that would be the best use of funds. You can add left and right surrounds later, as your budget allows. If you're going to end up with 7.1, the rear left, rights would be the last to add as they have very little program material to share. My .02

Not a bad idea. I'd use what you have/ look for a bargin and start saving for something you really want.

Most pieces will make good music, but to get really good music usually requires a little planning, looks like you are doing that. I have found that I rather have one better setup then several good setups. Good Luck!

One last thing, I think that if you like the Heresy sound, I would keep them and work on getting subs, better receiver, other speakers as you can. I think that the Heresy's will make your current receiver sound about as good as it can.

I think with a bit of sweat-equity you could make $400 go a long way. A powered subwoofer would be a good addition, so I would keep an eye out on Craigslist and Ebay (Local Pickup) because chances are someone won't want to ship something like that and use that to your advantage.

If you also keep an eye out you could pick up some fine Klipsch speakers at the same places, or locally at yard sales.

If you aren't in any hurry $400 could get you a bunch of gear and I hate to say this, but be on the lookout for "deals of a lifetime" on gear even if you don't need it. I know some will come down on me for suggesting that you flip gear for a marginal gain, but it will keep you going with some mad money.

I picked up my Herseys for $40, so they do happen along every once in a while. I also just sold a set of KG 2's for $50, so there are Klipsch deals out there.

I also picked up an Infinity 5 speaker + subwoofer set off of Ebay for $45 and picked it up in the same town.

You just have to invest time and if it's time you got, then you just have to wait and keep searching.
