I had been considering buying a new upconverter DVD player but just never got around to it....now I know why. I ran across this perfect HD DVD Toshiba HD-A3 with remote and manual on my lunch break today. I guess someone else besides Toshiba gave up on HD-DVD but for ten bucks it can upconvert all my standard dvds all it wants. :thmbsp: It works perfectly.

There were several HD DVD's [ some still unopened ] that the person who donated the player must have included. I picked up U2's Rattle and Hum, The Italian Job, 300, The Borne Identity, and Troy all for $20.

What a difference from standard DVDs.....I'm impressed. I'm not sure I'll buy anymore HD DVD titles, but if they're cheap enough, I might consider it.

Go stock up on some of the HD DVD fire sales. Wait until you see the picture in HD, you'll be buying a Blu-ray player before you know it and forgetting about upconverting because it just isn't the same.

Thanks to the fire sales I own 245 or so HD DVDs. Only got 27 Blu-rays. Even combined it doesn't touch my 577 Laserdiscs though.

Although I might be swayed to buy a few select favorites in HD DVD if I find 'em, I won't be getting BR anytime soon. The cost is just too prohibitive. I'm out until the BR movie titles drop below $20 and the players fall under $150. I used to buy lots of movies on the cheap. But now I'm lucky if I buy 2 dozen titles per year.

I'm out until the local video place starts renting them.

Oh...and the players are under $100 or start showing up at thrifts.

Oh...and I get one of those "high deaf" tvs.

For what its worth, a bit of shopping around probably could net you a player for $150. In fact thats what I paid for my Sony on clearance at Sears. In fact I passed on a Samsung for $99 at the same Sears the same day figuring the Sony was probably a safer bet since Samsungs have been known to have issues. I bought one of my HD DVD players (RCA HDV5000) a year ago for $71 on ebay, new in the box. The stuff is cheap if you look around, just patiently watch the Circuit Cities, Best Buys and Sears.

As far as movies, believe it or not I spent over $15 for almost every one of my HD movies, a few exceptions on titles I really really wanted, and I was doing so before the fire sales on HD DVD, I got many for under $10. I did this by buying mainly used titles, at the local FYE Superstores using 40% off coupons and the backstage pass program they run (which allows 10% off any item & combines with other offers).

Then again, I watch virtually no actual TV other than movies. So to me its worth it. I couldn't even begin to tell you what the primetime lineups are or anything like that.

Ya got a good deal. Do you have a high def T.V.?

I have an A30, and was going to get an A35 after the war was lost. Was waiting for the price to go down and I was about to buy and the price sky rocketed back up :( I did get one more new A30 as buck up for $119.00 shipped. I thought that was a good price.

I have purchased a number of the concert HD DVDs…. The pictures are amazing and the sound at 5.1 is incredible… I have a stack to play that I have not viewed yet…

OMI,

I have a Samsung 52" LN-T5271 120HZ 1080p HD TV in the living room.

I need to get a couple HDMI cables though as none of my modern HT gear [ besides my SAT tuner ] is hooked up to the big boy yet.

WOW - you're right OMI, what a difference a HDMI cable makes for resolution! Previously I was just using the RCA cables and this weekend I finally broke down and bought a Monster 120hz HDMI cable with some reward zone bucks I earned with the TV purchase- I'm sold boys! Did NETFLIX ever rent HD DVD's?
