View Full Version : Receiver balance between pair A & b instead of L & R

Hello,

How often do you use the balance function on your receiver? I almost never use my R & L balance. Most of my songs are digital and are pretty well balanced. I sometimes listen to vinyl, but not very often.

My question is this. I have a Concept 11.0 which has speaker outputs A, B, and C. What I would like to know is how hard would it be to rewire the receiver so that instead of balancing between the right and left channel, I can "fade" the speakers between speakers A and speakers B (or in a nutshell, a crude way of balancing from the front to the rear, just like in a car audio system).

The Concept only allows two pairs to be used simultaneously, and I find the the s50s aren't as loud as my smaller KLH speakers at lower volumes. What I want to do is to be able to have the 50s at the front of my listening room and the smaller KLH speakers at the rear. Some of the 50s midrange is lost in the room and I would like to be able to balance that out by having the KLH speakers at a lower volume. The only way to do this now is to plug both 50s into the left and both KLH into the right, but it ruins the stereo image.

I will eventually get better amplifiers, but for right now, I'd like something that works a little better.

What are your thoughts?

Sounds like you want a Dynaco quadaptor.

Use the pre-outs on the concept to go to a power amp with a little more gusto to drive the less efficient speakers. If the concept doesn't have a set of pre-outs you can use the tape out to feed another reciever or integrated but you have to use the controls on the 2nd unit to control the 2nd speaker's volume.

Assuming this is a stereo receiver, there is no way to rewire the balance control as you suggest, because what you are wanting to do is shift the balance between two pairs of channels, rather than between two single channels. To do that, you would need a control with 4 rather than 2 sections. The easiest thing to do is to add an external level control to one or both sets of outputs - Niles and others make such devices.
