I'll eat most anything, but for pete's sake, pass the Starbucks and Cracker Barrel. Sorry, but I ain't touching this stuff....

Indonesian coffee made from the seeds of coffee berries passed through the digestive tract of a Civet, and removed from the dung.

Also , a larvae (maggot) infested weeping cheese that's "alive" with the little buggers, and requires eye protection (at least recommended), when most people eat it.

I'd try the coffee if someone else is buying.. but I will RUN from that cheese..

From Wiki: "Piophila casei larvae can pass through the stomach alive (human stomach acids do not usually kill them) and take up residency for some period of time in the intestines, where they can cause serious lesions as they attempt to bore through the intestinal walls. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea."

Yeah.. sounds like a good time to me...

I wonder if I put some coffee beans in the meow mix and recover them later if I can save a few bux ...

Think I'll pass on the cheese, according to Wiki:

Risk of enteric myiasis: intestinal larval infection. Piophila casei larvae can pass through the stomach alive (human stomach acids do not usually kill them) and take up residency for some period of time in the intestines, where they can cause serious lesions as they attempt to bore through the intestinal walls. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea.

I might not want to touch the maggot cheese with live maggots :nono:, but the coffee they speak of is actually pretty good coffee. I don't usually drink coffee, but I have tasted that particular one before. They DO wash the beans very well and process them after the first "digestive treatment", and the stuff is of course then boiled, so any parasites and bacteria are killed off. It is safe to drink, and bears no hint of what was done to the beans, other than that it tastes pretty good.

I've also eaten steamed moth cocoons and live, still-wriggling squid in Korea, water beatles (they call them "water cockroaches") in Taiwan, huge glazed and fried grasshoppers in Thailand, all forms of innards/organs and various other "disgusting" things, and found most of them to be quite tasty, once you get past the initial squeamishness. Many vegetarians and some religious groups find the thought of eating things like bacon quite disgusting, too. It really is mostly about what you are used to.

Grubs and maggots are a major food group among many hunter-gatherer tribes, and are probably one of the foods which humans naturally evolved to eat. They are very nutritious, and usually have a mild taste that is vaguely nutty/almond-like. That said, I've seen them too many times in rotting things like roadkill to want to eat them, even though I know I should prize them for their nutritional value. When I see them, I think of specific times I've seen them before, and just want to :puke:

You've got me thinking. Our cat was nearly starved before we took her in and now she wolfs down her kibbles whole. Sometimes they come back up almost unchanged if she's got a hairball in there. If we could get her to swallow the beans the same way...:scratch2:

In some countries, fried tarantulas are considered a delicious delicacy! But not for me, I ain't eatin any insects if I can help it. Yeah, I know spiders and tarantulas are not insects, but they are still creepy, crawly things!
Another thing a lot of people don't know, is our government allows our proccessed foods to contain a minute percentage of insect parts.

Hi,

Not for me! I'd rather eat Lutefisk! Ja, right! For non-Norwegians Lutefisk is Lye-soaked, Gelatinous, Smelly, Fish! You must be ready for Lutefisk! This was done in the past as a means of food preservation.
