Ok, I managed to come into a pair of the better Onkyo Decks, a TA-2800 and a TA-2060. The problem is, both have issues, and I dont know where to start in fixing them. I'm a cassette newb, but mechanically inclined from years of working on cars and guns.

The 2060 has a issue getting the takeup reel going, and because of this, it eats tape on occasion, and it often takes multiple attempts to get it going, or even a little manual help. Otherwise, the deck plays fine if you nurse it into working. I cleaned everything, and took it apart for some inspection. From all outward appearances, the rubber idler wheel seems to be the problem, it is making contact with the takeup wheel, but it seems to have a problem spinning it. My question is, how should I go about fixing this? New wheel? if so, how do I get the current one off, an where can I get a replacement?

The 2800 is a tougher nut to crack. It to seems to have takup reel going, but it is a bit more consistant than the other. Likewise, this deck occasionally eats tape. The problem is, this deck has a gear driven takeup reel and idler, and there doesent seem to be a damn thing wrong with the geers. Getting started, the reels move verry slow for a second or 2, then take off. Likewise, when it does play, there seems to be a warble problem, and when I record, it jumps between tracks at random.

Disclaimer: I know very little about these things.

My first piece of advice would be to put a drop of sewing machine oil on the endbell bearings of the drive motors for the 2800. It sounds to me like the motor may be binding initially. I have read that this can fix this issue on older tape decks.

Alright, upon closer inspecton of the 2800, it appears that the problem is not the takeup reel, but rather the capstan. Seems the belt that drives the capstan has seen better days, and needs replacing. Now I've got another question, how in the heck do I get the thing apart to replace the capstan drive belt. Also, any ideas as to what would cause the funky recording issues. would a clip of what it's recording help?

Any advice is greatly appreciated
