Regarding passive preamps and tube amps....:scratch2: I have never tried the combo but it would seem to me that it would work well....any experiences or opinions?

Love my Maggie with the Reboy passive. It has been getting a lot of play around here the last few weeks.

I'm fairly sure you guys are referring to seperate preamps, designed for only that purpose, but I was thinking about running the amp section of my Fisher 600 from the preamp section of my Sansui AU-7700. :scratch2:

My experience is limited to one amp, my Dynakit ST-35, but I can tell you that it is happier when driven by an active preamp. It is very happy when driven by my Dared tube pre :)

I have heard a number of tube amps at Squidwards house being run off of his autoformer based passive preamp and I believe that it dissappears more than any other pre I have heard. At some of the local audio meets, I've had the opportunity to listen to Ed's FPIII and a few other home brew pres and they each seemed to present themselves in the sound in one way or another.
I know there can be issues with running a passive preamp with a source without a lot of drive (many tube based or just older sources in general) but I haven't got a lot of experience with these types of combinations.

I find it sort of depends on the amp. I've got a pair of pots and RCAs mounted on a hunk of copper plate, that I guess would qualify for a passive, and some of my amps really like it, and some not so much.:dunno:

I just hooked a Stan Warren Superphon SP100 passive into the Dynakit ST 70 circuit and I am very happy with the results. Nice preamp....a keeper for sure.:thmbsp:

I found this descriptor online....
Superphon S (for Signature) P100 is circa 1991, and was the first buffered passive preamp to be marketed commercially. It was a zero gain, zero feedback, direct-coupled, high slew rate impedance converter, and input selector with a decent quality stereo pot.

My experience with passives has been mostly very good. Many of the tube preamps I have owned and own have too much gain for my system. The passive preamps I have owned/own have really helped to tame this.
My Promitheus might seem run out of gas at very high levels but thats about it. I never listen that loud anyway so it has never been a concern.
Dynamics (for me) don't seem to suffer in this system either when compared to the active tube preamps I have owned. I like them because when they workout well, they don't seem to impart any sonic signature. That could be good or bad I guess but I'm happy just listening to my amps and not what another component is adding.
Another added feature is one less power cord :D

And the sheer noise/distortionlessness is the main thing I like :thmbsp:

if you look you can see that I have a P/C and the pre is listed as a "Buffered" passive preamp....any idea as to what that means???:dunno:
Regardless, this is perhaps the most transparent preamp that have ever owned...:thmbsp:
