I had my Sony TC-560 out today for it's annual cleaning. It's hard to imagine that back in 68' this was considered a portable unit. The size is massive compared to many other units from that time period. I would assume the word "portable" would have referred to being able to take this unit with you.
It looks like a suitcase when folded up. It does weigh about 60 pounds, and is very cumbersome to move around, believe me I know. I'd rather lift my Teac any day.

I'd bring it to school and wire it into something.....

besides, it gives you more arm strength.

How does it sound?

My AKAI M-8 R2R is not quite as big the speakers being internal But man doe it weigh a ton. I'm sure it would tip the scales at a good 40 lbs.

David the sound is very good and warm !!! It was my Grandfather's, he owned it for over 30 yrs and I remember as a little kid watching the reels spin. It holds a special place in my heart. A lot of great memories were made on this machine, hours of guitar playing and singing by my Grandfather. I have great sounding reels from the late 60's of family members talking and singing. It was common for my Grandfather to set up mics at Christmas time and just record conversations, etc. I am glad he did. I have transferred most of these recordings to CD and of course made copies for the family. Talk about smiles on their faces after hearing these long ago recordings.

Wow, that looks to be in really nice shape! I have a Sony 230 but it's rougher than that. Works, but doesn't sound great. I *think* the heads are ok, but the felt pad that holds the tape to the head isn't great.

Neat unit!

Take care,

Ed
