OK, I'll bite.
You get started by obtaining a R2R machine. Places to purchase include E-Prey, CL, and from members here, among other places.
Deciding which deck to buy is a much harder decision. Basically you need to weigh four main factors: Features vs Performance vs Price vs Reliability & Maintainability. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" machine that has the best of everything.
Everybody has their favorite makes and models, so trying to get a consensus about which model to buy is nearly impossible. That is a personal choice, and nobody else can make if for you. Although if we had a clue what your goals were, then we could at least make some recommendations
Tapes are proabaly going to be hard to find at GW. Either buy new tapes from US Recording Media, or buy NOS Maxell tapes of of E-prey. Those are the most reliable sources.
As to why do it? That answer will vary from person to person. Long recording times, or compilation tapes are reasons that some use them. Others like to minimize the wear on thier records by playing tapes of them instead. Others like to use them to make ultra-high fidility analog recordings by running at professional speeds. Personally, I like to record radio shows that I want to listen to later.
The best machines can make some really great sounding recordings. But the average machine is often nothing all that special sonically. And many of the lower-end machines can sound lousy.
YMMV.

Ok thanks.
I guess I'll do my expeirementing with reel to reel later. Gotta worry about a TT first. And anyway I've had 15 things shipped to me without damage from ebay, and since everyone says that it rare to get something in good condition, so I guess I'll quit while I'm ahead.
