I have an NAD model 613 cassette deck that has a feature called Play Trim. It was developed by NAD & Dolby Laboratories. What it does is compensate for any warping or dropouts on old cassettes. It also helps improve the sound of tapes made on other decks. It's a knob on the front & you just adjust it until you get the optimum sound from your cassette.

Play Trim was the main reason I bought this deck new some years back. I popped in a cassette of "The Very Best Of Stan Kenton" I bought back in high school that had experienced some drop-out of the highs. Well, this deck brought that tape back to life. It was nothing short of amazing.

Sounds like a knob to let you adjust the head alignment.

Could very well be. All I know is that it works great.

It's a slow afternoon, so I thought I'd look up Play Trim just to see exactly what it is and found this explanation. Now, back to my nap. :boring:

The Play Trim circuit is a narrow-band equaliser that operates in the top two octaves of the audio spectrum, providing an adjustable boost or cut of up to ±3 dB at 10 kHz and 6 dB at 20 kHz. The key to its success is its location in the signal path, ahead of the Dolby NR decoder. Since any high-frequency errors are corrected before Dolby NR decoding, playback fidelity can be as excellent in everyday use as it is in idealised lab tests.
