Tonight I put my Teac A-103 cassette deck back into my main stereo system. I had it hooked into my living room stereo, but it seemed like a waste, being as all I listen to in there are CD's when I have people over. It was serviced in winter of 2000-2001 & has only been used maybe 10-12 hours since then.
I plugged the Teac into the tape monitor of my Burwen 7000. As a precaution, I still cleaned the heads & rollers. Pristine; nothing to clean, no gunk on the swab. Then, I popped in a Nat "King" Cole cassette I bought in 1990, but not before rewinding it all the way thru; it's been years since I've played it. It was one of those Pair releases from Capitol, a 2-LP set on one cassette, but it wasn't released in Dolby; no logo on the tape or the insert, so no noise reduction. I have the Burwen plugged into my NAD C 340 integrated amp. Then, thru my Realistic Tape Control Center, I fed the signal thru the D/A converter portion of my Pioneer minidisc deck. The digital noise reduction feature on the Pioneer eliminated any hiss from the tape & it sounded great. I bought that tape 18 years ago & it sounded as good as the day I bought it. Amazing. No loss on the high end, which surprised me.
I'm glad to have it back in service. My bulk tape eraser is also earning it's keep again, erasing some Maxell XL-IIS tapes in my collection.
